Sega divests Humankind and Endless development studio Amplitude

Amplitude Studios Achieves Independence from Sega

Amplitude Studios, renowned for its acclaimed 4X strategy titles such as Endless Legend and Humankind, has officially severed ties with Sega, gaining independence through a staff-led management buyout. This announcement was made in a financial update released by Sega Europe.

As stated by Sega, “The decision to part ways follows a period of close consultation between SEGA Europe and Amplitude.”The studio now aims to concentrate on its ongoing projects and to further develop its own franchises, while Sega continues to nurture its diverse array of intellectual properties from both Japanese and Western markets.

A Brief History with Sega

Originally acquired by Sega in 2016, Amplitude Studios has spent the last eight years creating and launching several successful titles including Endless Space 2, Humankind, Endless Dungeon, and Dungeon of the Endless. While Amplitude has yet to disclose its strategic direction following this transition, it has confirmed plans to continue updates for Humankind.

Looking Ahead

Romain de Waubert de Genlis, studio director at Amplitude, expressed optimism about the studio’s future: “Amplitude is backed by strong, meaningful franchises, and our team is committed to creating the best games possible. This decision allows us to be more agile in our approach while continuing to shape the vision that we’ve had from the beginning, empowering us to push boundaries and be closer than ever to our community.”

Restructuring Trends within Sega

This independence for Amplitude comes on the heels of Sega’s similar decision in March when it divested Relic Entertainment to enable that studio’s autonomy. In a broader context, Sega has been navigating a challenging landscape, having canceled notable projects like Hyenas from Creative Assembly and implementing significant layoffs that affected approximately 240 staff members across various studios. As stated by the company, this latest transition marks the conclusion of its restructuring process in Europe.
