In an era where everyone uses different messaging services, managing multiple applications can be tedious. Fortunately, Beeper serves as a unifying solution by allowing users to consolidate all their messaging applications into a single platform, enabling seamless communication without constant app switching.
How Beeper Integrates Chat Apps
Beeper simplifies your messaging experience by enabling you to log into various chat applications and manage your communications directly through its interface. This integration works through two primary methods: either synchronizing messages in the cloud or storing them locally on your device.
At its core, Beeper utilizes Matrix, an open-source chat protocol, to create bridges that connect to numerous messaging platforms. This flexible architecture allows users to engage with multiple services while maintaining a cohesive experience.
The integration process differs based on whether the chat application in question uses encryption. For example, with encrypted platforms like Signal, messages are encrypted on the device using Beeper’s client before being sent through a bridge; they are then decrypted and encrypted again based on Signal’s security standards.
Conversely, for non-encrypted applications, messages are transmitted through Beeper Cloud, yet they remain encrypted to protect your privacy.
Supported Chat Applications on Beeper
Beeper allows you to connect with up to 11 popular chat applications:

- Messenger
- Google Messages
- X (formerly known as Twitter)
- Discord
- Telegram
- Slack
- Signal
- Google Chat
Beeper is compatible with various platforms, including iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, and Linux, ensuring you can access your messages across devices. However, it’s worth noting that certain applications, such as iMessage, are still unsupported. Future updates may expand this list of compatible apps.
Setting Up Beeper
The installation process for Beeper is straightforward and user-friendly. Start by downloading Beeper on your preferred operating system.
Begin your account creation by providing an email address—this doesn’t have to match your chat app emails. After entering your email, check for a code sent to your inbox.
Upon receiving the code, keep your Recovery Code secure. This code is crucial for accessing and recovering your account if you need to switch devices. Since Beeper employs zero-access encryption, their team cannot help you recover your messages; however, your conversations will still reside in the original chat applications.
You can opt to store your Recovery Code using a compatible password manager by tapping Store in your Password Manager, or choose Save Locally to keep it wherever you prefer. Click Next when ready.

Next, it’s time to connect your chat applications. Beeper allows you to configure two account types: Beeper Cloud Accounts and On-Device Accounts. Beeper Cloud ensures your chat history is encrypted and stored on their servers, making it easy to sync across devices.
If you prefer not to store your chat history on Beeper’s servers, you can choose On-Device Accounts. This option encrypts everything solely on your device, retaining your chats only within the native applications of WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook Messenger, Signal, Telegram, and X.
To link a chat app, simply tap Connect next to the desired application.

Press Continue to initiate the linking process. You’ll log into your chat app as you normally would; the synchronization should only take a few moments.

All of your connected chat applications are consolidated into a single list to enhance convenience. To filter between apps, simply tap the hamburger menu and select the application you’d like to interact with.

Utilize the search function at the top of the chat interface to find specific people or terms. You can respond to any message just by tapping it. Beeper richly supports features available on various platforms, including emojis, contact additions, group chats, and more, although certain functionalities—like voice calls or message edits on WhatsApp—may still require the native applications.
The free version of Beeper allows linking up to five chat accounts. An upgrade to Beeper Plus for $10/month accommodates 10 accounts and includes additional features, while Beeper Plus Plus offers an unlimited account option for $50/month.

Ensuring Chat Security with Beeper
Concerns about privacy are understandable, and Beeper has taken steps to enhance chat security. The app has modified its framework to encrypt all cloud-stored messages and introduced on-device accounts for users seeking additional security options.
Regardless of the method you choose, your discussions remain encrypted, accessible only through your recovery code. Even during transmission, your messages are protected. Decryption occurs only when messages transfer between Beeper’s encryption and that of the native app.
Beeper advises users, however, that using end-to-end encryption within the native applications is generally more secure than integrating them with Beeper.

Exploring Other Unified Chat App Options
While Beeper is a robust choice for aggregating chat applications, it isn’t the sole solution available. Previously, Texts served as an alternative, but the acquisition by Automattic resulted in its integration with Beeper.
A notable contender is IM+, supporting more than 24 chat applications and compatible across macOS, iOS, and Android. Impressive features include built-in support for ChatGPT, ideal for composing and scheduling professional Slack messages.
Another alternative, Franz, caters mainly to desktop users (Windows, macOS, and Linux) and supports a growing array of chat platforms. However, it restricts users to just three accounts for free.
Regardless of your choice when linking chat apps, be vigilant against spam messages to maintain an efficient messaging environment.
