In a recent announcement, Production Director Drew Stevens shared insights into Sea of Thieves’ strategic goals for 2025. The focus will center around three pivotal areas: enhancing game performance, increasing security measures, and ensuring player safety. With the upcoming patch scheduled for release on January 23, players can anticipate several key enhancements aimed at improving the overall gaming experience.
Since its launch, Sea of Thieves has captivated players with its immersive open-world pirate adventure. The developers have been diligent in keeping the game engaging by regularly introducing new content and mechanics. As of April 2024, the game achieved an impressive milestone, boasting over 40 million players. However, challenges have emerged, particularly on PS5, where reports indicated a 58% decline in player numbers since its debut on that platform mid-2024. Aware of these fluctuations and the competitive landscape, the development team is poised to tackle these issues in the coming year.

The forthcoming January 23 update will bring significant changes, particularly to the Trinkets system and networking functions. Adjustments to Trinkets will streamline their loading process when approaching a Sea of Thieves captain’s ship, while notable networking enhancements aim to eliminate stuttering issues previously experienced by players. Additionally, this patch will include several other minor fixes to improve gameplay.
Moreover, Stevens highlighted that the introduction of new treasures and ship improvements is also on the agenda for 2025. The studio is committed to both enhancing existing treasures and gradually unveiling fresh loot to players. Server performance will be enhanced to better handle player demands and ensure a stable gaming environment.

In response to ongoing cheating issues, Rare is stepping up its investment in game security, expanding the team dedicated to maintaining fair play. As these enhancements are in the pipeline, the studio assures players that further details about the 2025 plans will be shared in the near future.
