Last week, Rare introduced Season 14 of Sea of Thieves, enhancing the gameplay with new features aimed at encouraging stealthy and agile play styles within the pirate-themed universe. However, in a surprising turn of events just before the launch, it was announced that two significant features were being postponed for further testing. Furthermore, shortly after the launch, additional elements were temporarily removed as Rare addresses emerging bugs within the game.
Drew Stevens, the Production Director, shared insights in a developer vlog posted on the official Sea of Thieves YouTube channel, highlighting that the team is encountering critical issues pertaining to Season 14.
“The quality of Season 14’s launch has not met our expectations, and we are taking serious measures to regain control,”Stevens stated. “Our immediate goal is to stabilize live gameplay, after which we will work on reintroducing features once we are assured they meet our high standards.”
After a brief maintenance session on October 22, Rare announced the removal of the newly added crouching and disguise mechanics introduced with Season 14. According to the studio, these features have inadvertently reactivated old exploits, such as rapid switching, air control when using cannons, and invulnerability, necessitating additional time for a resolution.
For gamers hoping for a speedy fix, Rare provided disappointing news. Following a rigorous quality assurance evaluation, the team is gearing up for a more substantial update next week that aims to tackle significant concerns and, ideally, restore the crouching and disguise options.
“We recognize the frustration surrounding this Season’s release. The team is diligently working to reinstate these features, prioritizing the overall quality of the gaming experience,”said Stevens. “Implementing major procedural changes requires time, but we are committed to ensuring that we regain control over the game’s quality.”
Additionally, a significant update for Season 14 is anticipated in November, which is expected to reintroduce previously disabled traps and the ‘hanging from ledges’ mechanic, alongside other fixes and balance adjustments.
