Sea of Stars has garnered attention for its captivating homage to the classic JRPG, Chrono Trigger, encapsulating the nostalgia of that golden era. It’s no surprise that this indie title takes inspiration from such a legendary game, as many others have attempted to replicate its success with varying degrees of homage.
A notable element of Sea of Stars is its engaging battle system, which allows players to combine character skills for powerful duo or trio attacks, reminiscent of the acclaimed Double and Triple Techs from Chrono Trigger.
However, with the introduction of the Throes of the Watchmaker expansion, the dynamics change significantly as new classes for the protagonists emerge alongside additional party members. This transformation requires players to relearn and rediscover their combo strategies.
Some of these combos will come naturally as characters level up, thanks to the Renown feature introduced in the expansion. Others, however, are locked behind a Combo Scroll, which players will need to seek out. In this guide, I will outline all the combos available in Sea of Stars: Throes of the Watchmaker, equipping you with the knowledge to thwart the Solstice Warriors.
Locations of All Combo Scrolls in Throes of the Watchmaker

Overall, the party features seven unique combos. Each character has five combos; there are two trio attacks, and additional skills specific to some pairings.
Of these abilities, four can be obtained through leveling up, while three crucial combos are secured by finding specific Combo Scrolls in various locations. Below is a summary table detailing the available combos and their effects:
Combo |
Party Members |
Effect |
---|---|---|
Heap Frog |
Valere + Arty |
Jump off targets, inflicting Laser and Magic damage with each bounce. |
Jugglecore |

Delivers multi-hit moderate Bonk, Fire, and Magic damage to a single target. |
King Cake |

Heap Frog
Location: Rail Forest
The Rail Forest is encountered right after visiting Horloge Town, where players are tasked with retrieving Fardush’s train. Proceed through the forest until you need to activate a mechanism to manipulate several bridges.
Before you delve into the puzzles, head slightly south to discover a combo scroll tucked away in a small alcove. Descend the ledges to claim your reward: the Heap Frog combo. This scroll is hard to miss unless you’re actively trying not to find it.
Jugglecore
Location: Ivory Towers
After acquiring the Mule Drone in Ivory Towers, a new gadget essential for solving certain puzzles, you will soon face a challenge that requires assembling a grand portrait of the Narcis King.
Upon completing this task, ascend two flights of stairs to an area where platform blocks need to be collected using the Mule Drone for passage through the dungeon.
Look closely; a combo scroll is positioned in the northeast corner. To access it, remove the block nearest the entrance door with your Mule Drone. This action will uncover some vines, allowing you to climb down and retrieve Jugglecore, a combination that, while perhaps lacking in flair, serves a practical purpose for unlocking locks.
King Cake
Location: Wolf Rock
It may seem overly simplistic to guide you to this combo scroll since it’s nearly impossible to miss while navigating through Wolf Rock, but just in case you need a definitive lead for unlocking achievements.
At one point in your adventure, a puzzle will require you to untie a rocky platform for underwater travel. Continue swimming until you find yourself in different underwater areas.
Eventually, you will be swept over a waterfall. Allow the currents to carry you until you reach a series of rocky ledges to climb. At the summit, there will be an entrance leading to underwater access along with the Galette des Rois combo scroll—the most powerful duo combo within Throes of the Watchmaker.
