Scrubs is set to charm audiences once again with a much-anticipated revival, yet fans may find their favorite characters absent from the new season. With the show’s last episode airing fifteen years ago, the dynamics are bound to shift. Creator Bill Lawrence has mentioned that while the revival will introduce fresh faces, the absence of beloved characters from the original lineup adds a layer of disappointment for many. It’s worth exploring which characters we might miss as we prepare for a new chapter.
Originally airing from 2001 to 2010, Scrubs delivered nine seasons and a total of 182 episodes, leaving a significant mark on comedy television. During its evolution, the series took a drastic turn in its ninth season, rebranded as Scrubs: Med School. It introduced a new ensemble of interns alongside familiar faces. However, this fresh format did not resonate well with fans, contributing to its eventual cancellation. Fortunately, most of the classic cast members are eager to reprise their roles, though not everyone’s return can be guaranteed.
The Janitor is the Most Likely Original Character to Return
Neil Flynn’s Character is the Prime Candidate for a Comeback in Season 10

Throughout the original run, Neil Flynn’s character, the Janitor, notably formed a group dubbed the Brain Trust for humorous problem-solving. While their solutions tended to be unhelpful, this clever setup resulted in some of the show’s finest comedic exchanges. The Brain Trust primarily consisted of four main members: the Janitor, Sam Lloyd’s Ted Buckland, Rob Maschio’s Dr. Todd “The Todd”Quinlan, and Johnny Kastl’s Dr. Doug “Nervous Guy”Murphy. Unfortunately, it seems only Flynn will firmly be part of the revival.
The loss of Sam Lloyd in 2020 tragically prevents Ted from rejoining the cast. Additionally, Johnny Kastl has transitioned away from acting, establishing himself as a lawyer since 2009, making Doug’s return unlikely. Regarding The Todd, while Rob Maschio has expressed enthusiasm about Scrubs, his extended absence from acting raises questions about his ability to return. Moreover, his character may face challenges within today’s television landscape, potentially leading to a reimagined portrayal if he does make a comeback. Thus, Flynn’s Janitor stands as the sole member anticipated to reprise his role.
The Janitor’s Quest for a New Brain Trust: A Comedic Opportunity
Scrubs Season 10 Could Showcase the Janitor’s Search for New Collaborators

Although it is disheartening to see the original Brain Trust requiring a complete overhaul, viewers can look forward to the entertaining prospect of the Janitor recruiting new members. The revival could explore relationships with returning characters along with the integration of new ones, expanding the ensemble of this beloved misfit group. While some might hope for returning allies, there is a real possibility that Scrubs Season 10 will capitalize on fresh faces, offering a humorous take on the dynamics within a reconfigured Brain Trust.
