Scream 7 marks the seventh chapter in the iconic slasher film collection, previously featuring stars like Courteney Cox, David Arquette, and Neve Campbell in pivotal roles.
The inaugural film, titled Scream, hit theaters on December 20, 1996, becoming a massive box office triumph and holding the record as the highest-grossing slasher film globally for nearly two decades until the arrival of Halloween in 2018.
This thrilling murder mystery transformed into a beloved franchise, encompassing six films to date. The first four were helmed by Wes Craven, while the fifth and sixth installments were directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett, which premiered in 2022 and 2023, respectively.
Scream 7 Receives Release Date in Early 2026
On October 1, 2024, actress Neve Campbell officially confirmed via Instagram that Scream 7 is set for release on February 27, 2026. Neve will reprise her iconic role as Sidney Prescott in this eagerly anticipated film.
A long-time member of the original cast, she has featured in the first five entries of this renowned franchise but was notably absent from Scream VI due to a pay dispute.
As of early October 2024, Neve is currently the sole confirmed member of the cast for Scream 7. In an exclusive chat with Entertainment Tonight on July 30, 2024, she expressed her excitement about returning:
“We are going to follow Sidney. They did pitch the concept to me, and it’s the reason that I jumped on board. The fandom is nuts, they are incredible and very passionate about these films. I’m excited to give them a new one!”
Scream 7 Underwent Significant Cast and Crew Changes
Scream 7 experienced extensive changes even prior to its production. Initial plans included bringing back the main cast from the previous two films, with Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega expected to reprise their roles as Sam and Tara Carpenter, respectively. However, Melissa was dismissed in November 2023 following controversial comments regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Jenna Ortega also exited the project after her request for a significant pay increase was turned down. Furthermore, it remains uncertain whether Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding, who portrayed Mindy Meeks-Martin and Chad Meeks-Martin in Scream (2022) and Scream VI, will return.
The film’s original director, Christopher Landon, also stepped down in December 2023.
Returning Cast Members for Scream 7
Courteney Cox, the Friends alum known for her role as reporter Gale Weathers, is reportedly in discussions to join Scream 7. She informed Variety in September 2024 that she had not yet signed on for the film, but given her consistent presence in every installment since the series’ inception, her return seems highly likely.
Another actor rumored to be making a comeback is Patrick Dempsey, who portrayed Detective Mark Kincaid in Scream 3 nearly 25 years ago. In Scream (2022), he was revealed as Sidney’s husband and father to their three children, suggesting a strong possibility for his return, although this remains unconfirmed.
Kevin Williamson Takes the Helm for the Latest Film
Filming for the latest offering from the Scream franchise is set to commence in December 2024 in Atlanta. This film will be directed by Kevin Williamson, the original writer behind Scream, Scream 2, and Scream 4. He was also the producer for Scream 3 and served as executive producer for Scream (2022) and Scream VI.
Scream 7 will mark Williamson’s directorial debut within the franchise, as his only other directing credit is Teaching Mrs. Tingle, released 25 years ago in 1999.
