The absence of Scott Eastwood from the cast of “Suicide Squad 2″leaves open possibilities for his inclusion in James Gunn’s evolving DC Universe. Being the son of the legendary Clint Eastwood, Scott has established himself in the action film scene, although he has yet to receive an invitation from Gunn to rejoin the DC franchise in its new Chapter One.
Previously, Eastwood portrayed Lieutenant GQ Edwards in David Ayer’s “Suicide Squad,”released in 2016. In this role, he was a key companion to Rick Flag during a critical operation in Midway City. The conclusion of the film appeared to seal Eastwood’s character’s fate, as he orchestrated a major explosion to eliminate Incubus, a move that seemed to foreshadow his demise along with El Diablo. However, recent developments suggest that Eastwood’s fate isn’t as final as it once seemed, hinting at the potential for future appearances.
Scott Eastwood’s Intended Role in “Suicide Squad 2”
A Potentially Bigger Role for Eastwood
Initially, it was not planned for Eastwood’s journey in the DCEU to end with his first appearance. In a recent interview with ScreenRant, he disclosed that he was considered for a mystery character in “Suicide Squad 2.”Despite the cancellation of Ayer’s sequel, which paved the way for James Gunn’s revival of the franchise, Eastwood’s character was meant to evolve. He emphasized that he would have transitioned to a new persona if the project had come to fruition.
According to Eastwood, GQ Edwards was merely a facade, and there were numerous discussions regarding the character’s potential return in the sequel. Unfortunately, without the continuation of Ayer’s vision, DC never settled on who he would become. Eastwood believes that his character might have more depth in Ayer’s director’s cut, suggesting that fans may yet glimpse a further exploration of Edwards should that version be released.
“I know that there was talk about making me into another character and coming back. It just… David Ayer didn’t direct that next film then. I was like, ‘Look, let’s just see. Let’s see what the next thing holds. Is it a cool character? Who is it?’ And that never came around because he didn’t direct the film, so it was a different movie… They were just talking about who he (GQ Edwards) could come back as, and we could make him somebody and this and that, and they hadn’t really landed on any of that.”
Speculations Surrounding Eastwood as Nightwing
The Absence of Dick Grayson
The discourse surrounding Eastwood’s casting revealed intriguing possibilities concerning his potential role in the DCEU. Despite his minor part as GQ Edwards, fans speculated whether he could be portraying a larger, well-known character like Nightwing. If what Eastwood shared is accurate, Ayer’s intentions to transform Eastwood’s role into another iconic character could support the claims that Nightwing was under consideration.
A storyline from the Grayson comic series could serve as a narrative bridge. In this arc, Dick Grayson’s death is fake, allowing him to infiltrate a top-level secret organization, Spyral. Given director Zack Snyder’s assertion that the deceased Robin in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”was Dick, it is conceivable that Bruce Wayne orchestrated this covert mission. In this scenario, GQ Edwards could have been used as an undercover operative, providing intelligence on the Suicide Squad.
Scott Eastwood’s Aspiration: Batman
If the allegations regarding Nightwing hold any validity, Eastwood’s likelihood of portraying this character may have conflicted with his desire to embody Batman in Gunn’s DC Universe. In his interview, Eastwood expressed a keen interest in portraying the iconic superhero, citing the complexity of Batman’s dual identity as a reason for his appeal. Eastwood remarked that it would be engaging to explore both Bruce Wayne, the affluent businessman, and Batman’s darker, brooding aspects.
At the age of 38, Scott Eastwood is only seven years senior to David Corenswet, the actor chosen for Superman. This slight age difference positions Eastwood favorably to embody a Batman who is not only a seasoned hero but also a father figure to Damian Wayne and a part of an expansive Bat-Family. With his experience in serious action roles, Eastwood could effectively portray the multifaceted character of Bruce Wayne, making for a compelling addition to the DCU.
