Samsung Joins Apple in the Race for AI-Enabled Smart Glasses Technology

Samsung is gearing up to enter the competitive market of AI-enabled smart glasses, seeking to challenge Meta and Apple’s recent product initiatives. The tech giant aims to unveil two versions of its smart glasses, with anticipated release dates in 2026 and 2027.

Upcoming Versions of Samsung’s AI-Enabled Smart Glasses

According to insights from Yeux1122’s blog, Samsung is developing two separate projects focused on AI integration:

  1. The first model, codenamed SM-O200P, is set to launch in 2026. This iteration will feature auto-dimming technology for outdoor use but will not include a dedicated augmented reality (AR) display. Instead, it will primarily utilize voice commands for its AI functions.
  2. In contrast, the 2027 version will incorporate a dedicated AR display, similar to the Meta Ray-Ban models, allowing for a variety of AI-driven capabilities such as photography, video recording, music playback, and phone functionalities.

In a parallel development, Apple is pivoting away from its planned Vision Pro Air launch, previously slated for 2027, to prioritize their own line of AI-enabled smart glasses. Set for a 2026 launch, these new glasses will feature integrated cameras, microphones, and speakers, enhancing user interaction through an upgraded version of Siri, Apple’s AI assistant.

Key features of Apple’s forthcoming smart glasses include:

  • Hands-free notifications
  • Real-time AI assistance
  • AI-powered translation capabilities

However, similar to Samsung’s 2026 model, Apple’s smart glasses will not incorporate an AR display in their initial launch.

This shift indicates Apple’s intent to compete more directly with Meta’s established Ray-Ban smart glasses, which currently boast impressive features such as:

  1. Up to eight hours of mixed usage with two hours of continuous ‘live AI’ support.
  2. Ultra HD 3K video recording capabilities.
  3. An advanced noise cancellation feature termed conversation focus.

Recently, Meta has introduced its next-generation Ray-Ban Display smart glasses that offer:

  1. A display sufficiently large for reading text, viewing videos, directions, and live translations.
  2. A resolution of 42 pixels per degree (ppd), making it superior to Meta’s existing consumer VR headset offerings.
  3. A custom light engine and waveguide that reach brightness levels of up to 5, 000 nits, ensuring optimal performance in various lighting environments.
  4. The innovative Meta Neural Band, allowing navigation through hand gestures powered by electromyography (EMG), which detects brain-to-hand signal transmission.
  5. The availability of Ray-Ban Display glasses at a price point of $799.

It is essential to recognize that any competition emerging from Apple or Samsung won’t materialize until 2027, granting Meta a significant head start to strengthen its AR smart glasses market share.
