Samsung DDR5-5600 16 GB Module Price Surge: 3X Increase in South Korea Within Three Months

The recent surge in DRAM prices has created significant challenges for consumers seeking reasonably priced DDR5 RAM modules and kits globally.

Unprecedented Price Surge in South Korean DIY Market: 16 GB 5600 DDR5 from $47 to $142

Distributors in South Korea have begun to mandate the purchase of motherboards alongside any RAM module, reflecting the chaotic landscape that has emerged due to the ongoing AI boom. As a result, everyday users are seeing prices double what they would typically pay for RAM kits. But the true extent of this price inflation becomes clear when examining Samsung’s DDR5 memory in South Korea.

According to Danawa, a price monitoring service in South Korea, the Samsung Electronics DDR5-5600 16 GB module has experienced a staggering increase of over 300% in just three months. In August, the price was around 69, 246 Won, equivalent to about US$47. Currently, it commands an extraordinary price of 208, 090 Won, which is approximately US$142.

The price escalations began to spike considerably at the end of October, and the surge has only intensified this month. In some retail outlets, the module’s price has soared to as high as 216, 500 Won or about US$148. Such prices would have previously allowed buyers to purchase a premium 32 GB DDR5 kit, but now consumers are stuck with generic options featuring just a 5600 MT/s clock speed. This aligns with Samsung’s recent announcements of nearly 60% price hikes in their DRAM chip offerings.

While DDR5 prices globally have also escalated, most regions are experiencing increases at around 2X the regular price. However, premium modules like the Corsair Vengeance RGB 16 GB 5200 MT/s are currently listed for remarkable prices, such as $125 on Amazon in the U. S.The DRAM shortage is not only affecting standard desktop and laptop DDR RAM but is also contributing to the price hikes seen in mini PCs, pre-built systems, and GPUs.

Recently, AMD announced an impending price hike for its GPUs, attributing the increase to rising DRAM costs — this marks the second such announcement since October. The current trajectory of DRAM prices raises concerns about future availability and affordability, particularly as demand driven by AI technologies shows no signs of abating.
