Samsung has maintained its status as a frontrunner in the foldable phone market, continually pushing the envelope with its Z Fold and Z Flip series. As the company explores more ambitious designs, they have announced plans for a tri-fold smartphone, a project that has generated considerable excitement among tech enthusiasts. Since the unveiling of the tri-fold prototypes, anticipation for the official release has steadily increased. Alongside this, Samsung is also entering the extended reality (XR) sector, further heightening expectations within the tech community.
Samsung’s Upcoming Innovations: Tri-Fold Smartphone and XR Headset Set for 2025
At a recent earnings call, Samsung definitively announced its plans to launch both the tri-fold smartphone and the XR headset by the end of 2025. This significant stride into mobile and immersive technology marks a notable shift for the South Korean tech giant, who is also prioritizing AI-powered devices within its Galaxy lineup.
The anticipated Galaxy Z tri-fold smartphone is designed with two hinges that fold inward, providing an added layer of protection by allowing the screen to be enclosed when not in use. This design choice differentiates it from Huawei’s Mate X, which folds outward and exposes its screen. Samsung’s innovative approach could position it to capture a larger share of the foldable market.
With an October 2025 launch window on the horizon, Samsung is poised to be the first leading global company to release a tri-fold smartphone, especially with Apple projected to introduce its first foldable iPhone in late 2026. In the same earnings call, Samsung also highlighted that the XR headset, developed in partnership with Google, will debut by year-end. This device will be the first to utilize the Android XR platform, setting the stage for enhanced user experiences in virtual environments.
Samsung’s proactive strategy to launch these products ahead of Apple represents a shift from its historically slower pace of innovation. This aggressive timeline could provide Samsung a competitive edge, allowing it to secure a stronghold in the market before Apple’s products become available.
