Warning! This post contains a preview for Sam Wilson: Captain America #2
Captain America Faces Red Hulk: A Comic Battle Unlike Any Other
In the realm of comics, the epic clash between Captain America and Red Hulk is not just a cinematic event. While Anthony Mackie’s portrayal of Sam Wilson prepares to battle Harrison Ford’s version of Red Hulk in Captain America: Brave New World, the comic book narrative offers a distinctly different take on this confrontation.
The storyline kicks off in Sam Wilson: Captain America #1, where our hero receives an invitation to Eaglestar Corporation’s innovative flying Skydream facility. The organization claims to empower disadvantaged communities by cultivating crops in their aerial city. However, the plot thickens when Sam uncovers their ulterior motives, leading to an intense face-off with Eaglestar’s head of security, General Robert Maverick, who also takes on the mantle of the second Red Hulk (distinct from the original version set to appear in the MCU).

The recently released preview for issue #2, crafted by Greg Pak, Narcisse, and Edar Messais, showcases Sam Wilson utilizing a unique superpower to keep Red Hulk preoccupied. This ability, which remains exclusive to the comic book universe, likely won’t be depicted in Anthony Mackie’s version of the character.
Avian Telepathy: Sam Wilson’s Unique Advantage
One key power that sets Sam Wilson apart in the comics is his extraordinary ability to telepathically communicate with birds, including his loyal falcon, Redwing. This means that Captain America can call upon an essentially infinite number of avian allies—experts estimate there are around 50 billion birds globally, with approximately 6 billion residing in the United States.
This ability has been part of Wilson’s repertoire since the Red Skull’s manipulation of reality through a Cosmic Cube years ago. Recently, Marvel has begun to highlight this power, allowing Sam Wilson to summon a veritable aerial army when necessary. In the latest preview, Wilson cleverly employs his avian telepathy to distract Maverick, enabling him to attempt the removal of a control implant on the Red Hulk’s arm. The outcome of this dynamic altercation remains to be unveiled upon the full issue’s release.
The MCU’s Sam Wilson: A Different Kind of Captain America
In contrast, MCU’s Sam Wilson operates without the benefit of supernatural telepathy. The lack of a Red Skull in contemporary storylines means that the live-action version of Wilson won’t have access to avian telecommunication powers, which were linked to the Cosmic Cube known as the Space Stone. Instead, Wilson’s version of Redwing is a high-tech drone, a functional alternative that serves its purpose.
While the MCU’s Captain America is grounded in a more pragmatic reality, it does come with its own set of impressive abilities, particularly with the introduction of a cutting-edge vibranium wing suit, which will undoubtedly aid him in his confrontation with President Ross’ Red Hulk when Captain America: Brave New World hits theaters on February 14th.
Mark your calendars: Sam Wilson: Captain America #2 will be available for purchase on February 12th from Marvel Comics.
