When reflecting on Sam Raimi’s unrealized Spider-Man 4, speculation abounds regarding how it could have enhanced Spider-Man: Homecoming. The web-slinger has seen numerous reboots, yet Tom Holland’s version within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) appears firmly established. Before Holland, Tobey Maguire’s portrayal set the foundation for Spider-Man, and Raimi’s initial trilogy garnered immense popularity. Although the fourth installment never materialized, understanding its intended direction provides fascinating insights into Spider-Man’s cinematic evolution.
In Sean O’Connell’s book, With Great Power, it is revealed that the antagonist for Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 was to be Adrian Toomes, also known as the Vulture. This choice is particularly intriguing as this character was also selected for Spider-Man’s first appearance in the MCU. In a way, Spider-Man: Homecoming serves as a homage to the conceptual plans for Raimi’s fourth film. However, it prompts the question of how much more impactful the MCU portrayal could have been had Raimi been able to realize his vision of the Vulture.
The Distinct Vision for Vulture in Spider-Man 4

The envisioned Vulture for Spider-Man 4 diverges significantly from Michael Keaton’s interpretation in Spider-Man: Homecoming. While Keaton delivered a compelling and formidable version, Raimi’s take on the Vulture promised to be far more sinister and aggressive. This iteration aimed to present a character who was not only ruthless but also posed a substantial threat, leaving little room for negotiation.
In this scrapped narrative, Adrian Toomes would have been depicted as a morally ambiguous individual entangled in dubious dealings for both governmental projects and private contracts. His costume was designed to be menacing, featuring blades embedded in the wings and exuding a characteristically lethal aura. This more brutal reinterpretation would have highlighted the dichotomy of expertise and malevolence, ensuring that any encounter with him would be deadly—leaving only bones as the remnants of his adversaries.
Enhancing Tension with a Ruthless Vulture

Although the more ruthless version of the Vulture didn’t transition to the MCU, having such a narrative background would have significantly ramped up the tension in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Even with the two portrayals existing in separate universes, audiences would have vividly recalled the looming threat that a remorseless Vulture could represent.
Michael Keaton’s performance in Homecoming was masterful, particularly during the unforgettable car scene where Adrian realizes Peter’s true identity. The atmosphere was thick with tension, underscored by nuanced eye contact amid an unsuspecting Liz. Had Spider-Man 4 come to fruition, such a moment would have sent chills down viewers’ spines as they recognized the capabilities of the formidable Vulture. Importantly, a Spider-Man 4 featuring this version wouldn’t have necessitated any alterations to Keaton’s performance; rather, it would have enriched the narrative with additional layers of suspense and expectation.
