For avid Android gamers, the dream of playing PS3 titles on mobile devices has finally come true. The launch of aPS3e, the first operational PS3 emulator for Android, marks a significant milestone in the gaming community. Despite being in its early stages, this emulator already allows players to enjoy beloved titles, featuring adjustable graphics settings and comprehensive controller support. Let’s explore how to install and configure aPS3e for an optimal PS3 gaming experience on your Android device.
Understanding aPS3e
aPS3e is an open-source PS3 emulator designed for Android devices, leveraging the capabilities of the acclaimed RPCS3 emulator developed for PCs. It has been meticulously tailored to function seamlessly with Android smartphones and is completely free, devoid of any advertisements. However, a premium version is available for $4.99, offering no extra features, solely intended to support the developers’ efforts.
Requirements and Limitations of aPS3e
Playing PS3 games on mobile via aPS3e, much like RPCS3 on desktop, necessitates a powerful device for an enjoyable gaming experience. The app recommends devices equipped with at least 8 GB of RAM, an Octa-core 2.0GHz CPU, and a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 GPU or better for optimal gameplay. While some mid-range phones may run games, performance can vary greatly, making high-end devices preferable for smooth operation.
It’s important to note that aPS3e does not support all PS3 titles; certain games may encounter glitches and rendering problems. Currently, there is no official catalog of compatible games, so players will need to test their titles to determine compatibility. In our tests, games like Terraria, Rayman Origins, and Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction performed well, albeit with minor issues such as choppy cutscenes.
As a work in progress, users should anticipate potential bugs and crashes. Although we experienced stable performance during our testing, some users have reported issues.
Installing PlayStation 3 Firmware
To start enjoying your PS3 games, you first need to install the official Sony PS3 firmware. After downloading aPS3e, visit the PS3 system software update page, select Update using a computer, and click on Download PS3 Update to obtain the firmware.

After downloading, launch aPS3e, navigate to the menu in the top-right corner, and tap on Install Firmware. From the file manager that appears, locate the downloaded firmware file in your Downloads folder. Select it, and the installation will complete in a few seconds. This setup process is only required once when you initially install the app.

Acquiring PS3 Games
aPS3e facilitates the use of both decrypted PKG and ISO game files. To legally use these game files, you’ll need to dump the PS3 games you own, creating ISO/PKG files. For ISO file generation, a compatible Blu-ray drive and dumping software are required.
We recommend utilizing PS3 Disk Dumper, a free and open-source tool that provides a list of compatible Blu-ray drives. Once you create the ISO file, transfer it from your computer to your Android device.
For digital games, the process is slightly more complex. You’ll need a jailbroken PS3 console, which violates Sony’s terms of service. After modifying your console, install multiMAN (a file manager) and Apollo Save Tool (for license retrieval). These tools allow you to extract the game folder and its licenses from the PS3, which can be transferred via USB drives or FTP clients.
On your PC, employ PS3 ISO Tools to convert the game folder into an.iso file format.
How to Install and Load PS3 Games in aPS3e
The installation process differs between PKG and ISO games. Installing a PKG game is straightforward; simply open aPS3e and select Install RAP/PKG from the main menu. Choose your PKG file, and it will be installed, appearing in your games list.

For ISO games, the initial setup requires creating a dedicated folder. Using your file manager, navigate to internal storage and create a new folder named “PS3 Games.”

After that, return to aPS3e and select Set (*.iso) Directory from the main menu. Choose the newly created folder as the primary ISO directory. To add the game, simply move the ISO file into this folder. It will then appear on aPS3e’s games list automatically.

Once the game is in the list, tap on its icon to begin playing. Initially, the emulator will take some time (approximately 10-15 minutes for medium-sized games) to load the necessary game modules. Afterward, gameplay will proceed at standard speed.
Configuring Controls
The emulator employs touch controls for gaming, featuring all standard PS3 buttons as well as an additional button for quick access to aPS3e settings while playing. Players can customize these touch controls easily. From the main menu, select VirtualPadEdit to adjust the position of on-screen buttons according to your preferences.

To modify button sizes, use the back button on your phone; a scale bar will appear for easy adjustments. This menu also offers options to reset changes to default or to save and exit.

For users who prefer physical controls, aPS3e supports various controllers. Simply connect the controller to your Android device, launch the game, and the touch controls will automatically disappear, allowing you to enjoy gaming with your preferred setup.
Performance Settings Configuration
As performance issues may arise due to the demands of emulation and differences between games, it’s crucial to know which settings can affect your gaming experience. Below are key options available in the Video or Core settings of aPS3e:

- PPU Threads: This setting determines how a multi-core CPU is utilized for emulation. For best performance, experiment with maximum threads and lower settings if you encounter any glitches.
- Resolution: Increase for better visual quality or decrease for enhanced performance; 1280×720 typically offers a good balance.
- Shader Precision: This controls the complexity of shader calculations. Keeping it low enhances performance, although the Auto setting can help find a balance for your device.
- Use GPU texture scaling: Enable this for the GPU to manage texture scaling more efficiently than the CPU, but be aware it may cause some visual anomalies.
- Texture Upload Mode: Select GPU for improved performance if your phone’s GPU is powerful.
If your device features a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or better GPU, consider using custom drivers (Turnip driver) from Qualcomm for a notable performance improvement in aPS3e. Download the latest Turnip Driver (do not unzip), then navigate to Settings → Video → Vulkan and select Use Custom Driver (available only for supported GPUs).Add the driver’s download path to complete the installation.

aPS3e is still a new platform and undergoes continuous development. If a particular game is not yet functioning, revisit later—support for additional titles is always in the pipeline.
