In Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma, a captivating feature is the ability to tame nearly every monster you encounter, including formidable boss creatures. Among these, one of the most accessible foes to befriend is the Cursed Tree. This boss, located in the enchanting Guardian Grove of the Spring Region, offers a unique opportunity due to its relatively low level and the ease with which you can acquire its favorite gift.
Although the Cursed Tree stands at Level 15, low-level characters in Guardians of Azuma can quickly level up with adventure. After a few days of teamwork, your new leafy companion will catch up to the party, contributing its powerful ranged attacks and Wind-element AOE to your roster. Despite its role as an Attacker, the Cursed Tree boasts a robust health pool, ensuring it can endure in battle.
Initiating Monster Taming

To commence the journey of befriending the Cursed Tree, you first need to unlock the monster taming feature. This significant aspect of Rune Factory becomes available once you restore the God of Autumn, Kurama. After initiating the revitalization of Autumn Village, the character Kotaro will enlist your help in taming a Buffamoo. This marks a pivotal moment as it allows you to utilize the Plum Branch to perform the Dance of Bonds, a crucial step in taming monsters.
Requirements for Taming

Once you’ve successfully executed the Dance of Bonds, a smiley-face icon will signify your taming attempt. Defeating the monster is just the beginning—once vanquished, you can attempt to befriend it by offering gifts. Notably, the item does not need to be in your Inventory; you can provide a gift directly from Storage or even from your construction materials.
Monsters will display their reaction to the gifts—hearts for positive responses and skulls for unfavorable ones. Although you can try offering a gift up to three times, even a favorable reaction does not guarantee success in befriending the creature. The mechanics of monster taming in Guardians of Azuma lack substantial explanation, but it appears that your chances of success are affected by the level difference between your party and the monster. My experience shows that I have been unable to tame any monster significantly above my level.

Additionally, one important aspect of monster management is constructing a barn to house your newly befriended creatures. You can place the barn in any village, and once a monster is befriended, it can be assigned to any barn. By assigning a Herder to your barn, you will receive valuable raw materials necessary for the plethora of crafting recipes in the game.
Building |
Materials |
Storage Units |
---|---|---|
Barn |
35 Lumber, 15 Stone |
4 |
Large Children |
100 Lumber, 40 Stone |

Remember that smaller monsters, like Woolies, occupy one barn slot, while larger creatures require more space. Fortunately, you can rearrange your monster roster at any point through the Villagers menu.
Steps to Replace Bulbasaur
If you’re set on adding the formidable Cursed Tree to your lineup, you will need to meet the following prerequisites:
- Four open slots in your Barn
- A Wind Crystal
By now, your character’s level is likely sufficient to ensure a smooth attempt at befriending the Cursed Tree. If you haven’t acquired a Wind Crystal yet, they can be dropped by Lantern enemies or obtained by defeating the Cursed Tree itself. Should you find yourself empty-handed, purchasing a Wind Crystal from Hisui’s shop in Summer Village is an option, albeit at a steep price of 10, 000 gold.

Once prepared, return for a rematch! Warp to the Dragon Statue near the Guardian Grove and approach the floating purple orb to initiate the battle again. Use the Plum Branch until the smiley-face icon appears and then proceed to chop down the Cursed Tree.
As you progress, watch for a reskin of this boss later in the game, which can also be tamed using a Wind Crystal.

After defeating the Cursed Tree, present it with the Wind Crystal, and send it to a suitable barn of your choice. If your attempt at taming fails, don’t worry; you can return on another day to retry the process.
There’s no cap on how many times you can confront these powerful monsters, meaning you have unlimited chances to tame the Cursed Tree and add it to your collection.
