New Insights into Next-Gen Gaming APUs for PlayStation and Xbox
Prominent leakers have disclosed the codenames for the Accelerated Processing Units (APUs) that will drive both the upcoming PlayStation 6 and the new PlayStation handheld device. This revelation adds weight to prior rumors regarding an AMD APU anticipated to power the next-generation Xbox console.
Details on the PlayStation 6’s APU: Orion
In a recent video, renowned gaming analyst channel Moore’s Law Is Dead presented fresh information surrounding the leaked AMD Zen 6 Magnus APU. The codenames shared in the update indicate that Orion is designated for the PlayStation 6’s APU, while the handheld device is assigned the codename Canis. Notably, AMD leaker Kepler L2 has independently confirmed that Canis pertains to the handheld system, highlighting its monolithic design.
Transitioning to Next-Gen Xbox APU: Magnus
With the uncertainty surrounding the original identity of the Magnus APU for the PlayStation 6 clarified with the introduction of Orion, it becomes evident that the AMD Zen 6 APU previously leaked is likely the one destined for the next Xbox. According to Moore’s Law Is Dead’s analysis, the Magnus APU features a 3nm RDNA “AT2″GPU die, which may include up to 70 compute units (CUs) but is anticipated to achieve yields around 68 CUs. Furthermore, it will incorporate a 192-bit memory bus, which deviates from earlier suggestions of a 384-bit bus. This change raises questions about Microsoft’s potential implementation of a split memory model, as indicated by Kepler L2, because a 192-bit bus may not sufficiently support both the CPU and GPU efficiently.
Future Expectations for Gaming Consoles
As we gather more information regarding the PlayStation 6 and the next Xbox, it is become increasingly evident that innovation in gaming technology is on the horizon. With advancements such as the PlayStation’s new Spectral Super Resolution Upscaler utilizing machine learning, gamers can anticipate significant enhancements not only in hardware specifications but also in overall gaming experiences.
