The Star Wars universe appears poised to resurrect more characters from the sequel trilogy, potentially including the fan-favorite Rey, portrayed by Daisy Ridley. However, the pivotal question remains: will John Boyega return to his role as Finn?

Following the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which concluded the saga initiated by George Lucas over four decades ago, Lucasfilm has faced challenges in launching new cinematic ventures set outside the Skywalker narrative. Since the last film debuted nearly five years ago, there are whispers that the studio aims to bring back Ridley’s Rey for a series of new projects, and Finn might make a return as well.

Renowned industry insider Daniel Richtman has reported that Disney and Lucasfilm are interested in actively pursuing Boyega to reprise his role as Finn, the former Stormtrooper who shifted allegiance to the Resistance. Boyega’s portrayal spanned all three movies of the sequel trilogy, but he has not returned to the franchise in any live-action capacity since the conclusion of The Rise of Skywalker. The specifics regarding Boyega’s potential involvement in future projects remain vague, raising questions about whether he would join Ridley in her new adventures or possibly star in a solo spinoff.

The pressing concern is whether Boyega would be amenable to stepping back into the shoes of Finn. Many fans have expressed disappointment over the character’s development throughout the trilogy. When Finn first appeared in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, he emerged as a multifaceted character, grappling with the moral implications of being part of the First Order and ultimately choosing to join the Resistance. The trilogy teased intriguing possibilities for his journey toward becoming a Jedi, suggesting he might be Force-sensitive. Following Boyega’s public critiques regarding the treatment of his character, he and Disney engaged in discussions to address these issues. While Boyega has signaled some reconciliation with the ups and downs of his experience in the franchise, he indicated in a statement last year that he is content with how Finn’s narrative concluded in The Rise of Skywalker. Nevertheless, there’s still a glimmer of hope that he could be persuaded to revisit the role, though fans may want to temper their expectations.
