Speculation about the Switch 2 indicates that it may have entered mass production as early as late September 2024. This belief is bolstered by a recent increase in hardware leaks which describe or display the design of Nintendo’s next console. Conversely, leaks concerning games designed for the Switch 2 have been relatively scarce.
Discovery of Potential Switch 2 Title
In an intriguing twist, Gotham Knights has been highlighted as a possible title for the next-generation console. YouTuber Doctre81 uncovered a LinkedIn profile belonging to a Polish developer, which mentioned their work on optimizing two versions of the game for “unreleased”platforms. Given its previous rating for the original Switch back in September 2023—despite never being released—many believe one of these platforms refers to the upcoming Switch 2.
Speculation Around Unreleased Versions
The other unreleased version of Gotham Knights is assumed to target Nintendo’s next console. The porting process for a console that is expected to feature backward compatibility could be relatively straightforward. Interestingly, the references to the two unannounced versions on the developer’s LinkedIn profile were removed shortly after Doctre81’s findings surfaced in early January 2025.
Challenges with Gotham Knights on Previous Platforms
Considering the performance difficulties Gotham Knights faced on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, it stands to reason that the developers may have experienced further challenges in adapting the game for the less powerful original Switch. Given that more than two years have elapsed since the game was rated for the Switch, it’s conceivable that plans for a direct port have been set aside in favor of a potential release for the Switch 2.
Future Prospects for Switch 2 Games
The current lineup of confirmed titles for the Switch 2 remains limited, primarily due to Nintendo’s lack of a formal announcement regarding the new console. However, some games, such as the open-world RPG My Time at Evershine and the Persona-inspired title Bestiario, are already known to be in the works for the upcoming system. Playtonic Games has also hinted at a remaster of Yooka-Laylee targeting a Switch 2 release.
Many more third-party titles are anticipated to be revealed once Nintendo officially unveils the Switch 2. The company has indicated plans to announce the new console by the end of its fiscal year on March 31, 2025. This positions the Switch 2’s launch for retail availability likely in Q2 2025.
