The renowned PS3 emulator RPCS3 has recently updated its GPU recommendations, now favoring AMD’s RDNA architecture and NVIDIA’s Turing series for optimal performance.
RPCS3 Issues New GPU Guidelines: Minimum Recommendations Include AMD RX 5000 and NVIDIA RTX 2000 Series
In a recent announcement via their social media platform X, RPCS3 outlined the new GPU requirements for its popular emulator. This update comes in light of major GPU manufacturers discontinuing support for various older GPU lines. The update indicates that the older AMD RX 400 series and NVIDIA GTX 900 series are no longer included in their recommended GPU list.
We have updated our recommended GPU requirements to reflect the end of driver support from AMD and NVIDIA for old GPUsAMD: Polaris (RX 400) -> RDNA (RX 5000)NVIDIA: Maxwell (GTX 900) -> Turing (RTX 2000)We also clarified that Intel GPUs are not recommended and unsupported pic.twitter.com/ZWedr2KZ1P

The revised recommendations suggest using AMD’s RDNA architecture, specifically the Radeon RX 5000 series, or NVIDIA’s Turing architecture, represented by the GeForce RTX 2000 series. As such, RPCS3 has de-emphasized two generations of graphics cards, including AMD’s RX 400 and RX 500, along with NVIDIA’s GTX 900 and GTX 1000 series. However, this is not to suggest that support for these older GPUs has been terminated. Users can still utilize them with no significant performance degradation.

RPCS3 has maintained its minimum requirement to include NVIDIA’s Fermi GPUs, which are part of the GTX 400 series. Importantly, there have been no modifications to the emulator’s code that would indicate a heightened demand from users. The RPCS3 development team also reiterated that while Intel GPUs are not officially supported, the emulator has been reported to function with Intel’s Arc A and B series. However, many users have encountered compatibility issues with those models.
For those who enjoy using RPCS3 for gaming, there is no need for concern regarding performance, as the emulator is primarily CPU-intensive. As long as users have a modern GPU with “Vulkan 1.2″capabilities, the emulator should operate smoothly.
The decision to remove the RX 400/500 and the GTX 900/1000 series from the recommended list aligns with the fact that both AMD and NVIDIA have ceased support for these older generations. AMD concluded support for its Polaris GPUs by the end of 2023, while NVIDIA discontinued support for its Maxwell and Pascal models a few months prior.
