Roku Launches New Subscription Feature That Outshines Google TV

One aspect I particularly appreciate about Google TV is its ability to aggregate the shows I’m currently watching alongside the latest releases from my subscriptions. As a Roku user, I’m equally excited about the new Roku Subscriptions feature, which enhances the platform’s user experience.

Understanding Roku Subscriptions

Recently, I discovered the latest update for Roku, version 15.1, which introduced a new option in the left-hand menu titled Subscriptions. Although Roku often provides little guidance on new features, the addition was immediately noticeable and sparked my curiosity. Traditionally, I’ve favored Roku’s layout for navigating my streaming apps, while also enjoying Google TV’s straightforward approach to revisiting content without the hassle of switching between multiple apps.

The Roku Subscriptions feature simplifies this process by consolidating all your subscriptions in one location, avoiding the clutter that can accompany a home screen on Google TV. This means I can now enjoy a more organized viewing experience.

In this new section, all your subscriptions are displayed together. You do not need to subscribe through Roku to see them listed; even external subscriptions will appear here. For example, although I have only one premium subscription made directly through Roku, all my subscriptions are conveniently found on the same screen.

It is important to note that this feature is distinct from browsing premium content available through the Roku app itself.

Accessing the Latest Releases Across Streaming Apps

Previously, to view the latest releases in the streaming apps I use, I had to navigate each application individually. Now, I can simply access Roku Subscriptions from the home screen and check the Newly Added to Your Subscriptions section. Currently, I find myself with a list of 35 new shows or movies at my fingertips. This section not only displays the newest offerings but also indicates which app each title belongs to. With nine streaming services at my disposal, this significantly streamlines my viewing process.

Resuming Where You Left Off

In addition to new content, the feature includes a Continue Watching (Subscriptions) section, which highlights content specifically from premium subscriptions, excluding FAST TV services. This allows you to pick up watching right where you left off. An excellent feature is that if you have multiple profiles on any of your subscriptions, the specific profile associated with a show or movie is identified, making it easier to monitor who is watching what.

Currently, I have 28 shows and movies listed in this category, providing me with a comprehensive recap of my viewing history.

If you’re curious about what everyone is raving about, simply navigate to the Popular With Your Subscriptions section. This area showcases trending content on your subscribed platforms, which isn’t always brand new but reflects what’s capturing viewers’ attention. In past experiences, I’ve spent extensive time scrolling through each app to spot popular titles, but now I can discover what’s trending in a matter of minutes.

The Roku Subscriptions feature offers tailored rows for each premium service. Regardless of the number of subscriptions you hold, each service is given its own section, presenting a mix of trending, newly added, and recommended titles that correspond to your viewing preferences. Simply scroll down to the Included with App Name Subscription category to explore around 40 options per row, making it easy to find shows or movies without jumping between multiple apps.

This organized layout resembles a digital TV guide, centralizing streaming content from various platforms, including those I subscribe to both through Roku and directly from service providers like Disney+ and HBO Max.

Reviewing Your Saved List

Any titles you’ve saved in your Roku Save list will also be accessible through the Subscriptions feature. If certain shows are available on multiple services, you can view all the options under each title, enhancing your ability to choose where to watch from.

Exploring Extra Content Beyond Your Subscriptions

While the primary focus of Roku Subscriptions is on content linked to your subscriptions, it’s possible to discover trending titles on additional applications. By scrolling past the Your Subscriptions section, you’ll find recommendations from other premium apps. Any title that requires a subscription to view will be marked with a dollar sign, helping you quickly assess your options.

Activate Roku Subscriptions Today

Generally, your Roku device will automatically check for updates on a daily basis. However, if you haven’t received the update and do not see the Subscriptions option in the left-hand menu, navigate to Settings → System → Software Update to manually check for the update.

Roku Subscriptions enables direct access to premium services, but for those instances in which you know exactly what to watch, you can still rely on the individual app icons on your home screen. In the event that these icons are missing, I’ve included steps to restore them.
