Following their victory in Miami, Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden have regained their position at the top of the ATP rankings.
At the Hard Rock Stadium, Bopanna and Ebden made a comeback on Saturday, March 30, defeating Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek to claim the Miami Open title. The Indian-Australian duo secured a 6-7(3), 6-3, 10-6 victory in one hour and 43 minutes after winning the final six points of the match.
As a result, the men’s doubles rankings have undergone a reshuffle. Boppanna has now claimed the top spot, followed by Ebden in second place, while runners-up Dodig and Krajicek have moved down to third and fourth place, respectively.
Bopanna’s victory at the Miami Open made him the first Indian champion since Leander Paes, who won the tournament with Radek Stepanek in 2012.
Bopanna, who teamed up with Ebden, secured the Indian Wells championship last year, earning him the title of the oldest ever Masters 1000 winner. Continuing his success, the 44-year-old surpassed his own achievement this year by winning the Miami title.
Rohan Bopanna Discusses the Motivation Behind Playing at the Highest Level
Despite facing challenges in Miami, Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden persevered through difficult matches. They had to overcome deficits twice during their journey to the final, and ultimately, they were once again put in a position where they had to do so for the third time in just one week.
After winning the Miami Open title, Bopanna spoke about his contentment with the outcome and credited Ebden for being the perfect partner on the court.
“It’s been magical, especially to win here, in the Magic City. It’s been beautiful. I have to thank Matthew, who has been such a great partner for what he does on the court, with the communication, with the way we handle pressure situations,” Rohan Bopanna said, via the competition’s official website.
Bopanna expressed his contentment upon regaining the number one ranking in men’s doubles and shared that he is currently relishing his time on the tour.
“I think that is what everyone plays for, they want to be at the highest level and want to play at the top. When you win a tournament and you reach the top of the rankings, you’re the best in the world. It’s a beautiful moment and you know, those 20-30 years of hard work you have put into is the reason why I am enjoying it right now and I’m really happy,” he added.
The pair has been having a successful season. In the beginning of the year, they defeated Italy’s Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori to win the Australian Open title.
