Robert Eggers’ Upcoming Project Could Be a Remake of Labyrinth

Overview of Upcoming Labyrinth Remake by Robert Eggers

  • Acclaimed director Robert Eggers is preparing to remake the beloved fantasy film Labyrinth, marking a shift from his usual horror-themed narratives.
  • The upcoming version of Labyrinth aims to revive the authentic charm of practical effects by employing puppetry instead of computer-generated imagery (CGI).
  • The original Labyrinth, which was initially met with mixed reviews, has since amassed a dedicated fanbase, inspiring numerous sequel attempts.

Following the successful release of Nosferatu, Robert Eggers appears to have identified his next creative venture. Although this project diverges from the horror genre characteristic of Nosferatu, it is expected to incorporate darker themes.

Eggers is known for his diverse filmography, predominantly in the horror genre. His works, such as The Witch and The Lighthouse, offer a more cerebral approach to storytelling rather than typical horror tropes. While Nosferatu leans toward a more traditional horror style, Eggers still imbues it with his unique artistic voice, reinterpreting the vampire mythos.

According to insights from industry journalist Jeff Schneider, Robert Eggers is set to helm a remake of the iconic fantasy film Labyrinth. This new adaptation is believed to be a collaboration with the Jim Henson Workshop, known for its original 1986 film featuring legendary performers David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly. Staying true to its roots, this remake is likely to showcase puppetry for characters and creatures, steering clear of modern CGI techniques. Remarkably, this project will also be Eggers’ first foray into a film aimed at a family-friendly audience, as previous works were typically associated with higher age ratings.

The original Labyrinth, helmed by Jim Henson, narrates the tale of a teenager named Sarah, portrayed by Jennifer Connelly, on a quest to rescue her baby brother from the Goblin King, Jareth, played by David Bowie. Throughout her journey in the maze, Sarah encounters an array of enchanting creatures, with the film incorporating elements of music without being categorized strictly as a musical. Notably, this film played a pivotal role in launching Connelly’s acting career.

Upon its initial release, Labyrinth faced lukewarm responses from both audiences and critics. However, over the years, the film has garnered a significant cult following, leading to various attempts at creating sequels.

In 2016, an attempt was made to develop Labyrinth 2 with Nicole Perlman, known for her work on films like Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel, signing on as a writer. Initially, Fede Álvarez was set to direct, followed by Sam Raimi after Álvarez’s departure. Unfortunately, this sequel never materialized, serving as a cautionary tale for Eggers as he embarks on this new Labyrinth project, still in its nascent stages.
