Director Robert Eggers is gearing up for his upcoming project following the notable success of Nosferatu, which has proved to be a financial hit at the box office. This reimagining of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent horror classic tells the chilling story of Count Orlok (played by Bill Skarsgård), a sinister vampire whose fixation on Ellen Hutter (Lily-Rose Depp) ultimately threatens the life of her husband, Thomas (Nicholas Hoult), as well as the safety of their isolated coastal town. Eggers’ interpretation adds a unique twist to the German expressionist genre, delivering a film that is both grotesque and enticing, having grossed over $100 million globally since its release on Christmas Day.
In a recent interview with The Daily Beast, Eggers shared insights about his aspirations following the record-breaking performance of Nosferatu. At just 41, Eggers has established a strong reputation with critically acclaimed horror films, including The Witch (2015), The Lighthouse (2019) — which earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography — and The Northman (2022). Despite Nosferatu becoming the highest-grossing film in his career thus far, Eggers indicated that this success won’t necessarily alter his forthcoming opportunities:
It only helps. But it’s still a funny time in the industry right now anyway. I can’t make a $100 million esoteric non-IP movie just because Nosferatu did alright.
Although Eggers acknowledged that adapting an established property offers certain creative advantages, he expressed a strong desire to pursue an original film next. He elaborated:
[I] always have a lot of scripts in the works, because you need to. And by the way, just because I want my next thing to be an original thing doesn’t mean that anyone’s going to finance it [laughs]. But that’s what I would like.

Horror’s Rising Star Charts His Next Move
Eggers has explicitly stated his intent to focus on an original story for his next cinematic venture, diverging from the path of remaking Nosferatu — itself a reinterpretation of Bram Stoker’s iconic 1897 novel, Dracula. While he recognizes the marketing benefits of working with known intellectual properties, he is passionate about creating original narratives, an essential aspect of his body of work, in which he typically writes or co-writes his films.
Our Perspective on Robert Eggers’ Next Movie
From Nosferatu to New Frontiers
Robert Eggers has crafted a distinct identity by delivering bold and compelling original stories. While Nosferatu allowed him to artistically reinterpret a classic with vigor, there is great anticipation for what new narrative he will explore next. His pursuit of originality is both courageous and essential in the current cinematic landscape.
With the success of Nosferatu behind him, Eggers is poised to develop another innovative project. Although navigating the current market that heavily favors established franchises can be challenging, his increasing recognition positions him as a filmmaker capable of transcending the conventional IP landscape to produce something truly remarkable once again.
