Mythic Quest, the acclaimed comedy series on Apple TV+, takes audiences on a humorous yet insightful journey into the dynamic world of a leading multiplayer video game development team. The narrative explores their creative endeavors—crafting immersive worlds, developing compelling characters, and establishing narratives—all while navigating the complexities of office politics. Celebrated for its impeccable comedic timing, the series delves into relatable themes such as work-life balance and the tensions between creative teams and management, resonating with a broad spectrum of viewers.
Created by Rob McElhenney, alongside co-creators Charlie Day and Megan Ganz, Mythic Quest continues to engage fans with its unique storytelling. McElhenney plays the role of Ian Grimm, and both he and Day share their experience from their long-running collaboration on It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, which is set to debut its seventeenth season later this year. Season 4 of Mythic Quest kicked off with the premiere of its first two episodes on January 29, 2025, followed by weekly releases every Wednesday.
In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Rob McElhenney provided valuable insights into the challenges he faces, straddling both the creative and management aspects of the projects he is involved in, including both Mythic Quest and Always Sunny. Notably, he discussed the significant decision to incorporate a mid-season time jump, a move that was essential not only for advancing the storyline but also influenced by real-life circumstances. He also expressed his enthusiasm regarding fan reaction to Charlie Day’s appearance in the season trailer, discussing the character written specifically for him.
Rob McElhenney: Navigating Management and Creative Roles
“I always wind up leaning back towards the creative, but nevertheless, it’s still a difficult position to be in sometimes.”

Screen Rant: The theme of management versus creative flow is prevalent in this season. Given your dual roles, did this inspire any aspects of the storyline?
Rob McElhenney: I have consistently found myself in this intermediary position, not necessarily by choice. Initially, I did not view myself as part of the production or business side. Yet, the evolution of Sunny has afforded me the opportunity to navigate both realms.
This experience simplifies certain aspects while complicating others. When I was solely in a creative role, I viewed management skeptically, thinking, “They don’t understand our vision; let us create freely.” However, stepping into management reveals the underlying rationale behind decisions, leading me to see both sides of the argument. I still lean towards the creative side, but it’s a challenging balance at times.
Charlie Day’s Role in Mythic Quest: Tailored for Talent
“Some of it was just finding the best time to bring him in and a character that we knew he would crush.”

Screen Rant: Fans were elated to finally see Charlie Day in the trailer. What influenced the decision to time his appearance just right?
Rob McElhenney: The timing was partially based on scheduling logistics, but we also wanted to ensure we introduced his character at the perfect moment, one we knew he would excel in. We’ve discussed this for years, knowing that our daily collaboration would make the character’s introduction seamless. We always envisioned a role crafted especially for him, and fortunately, he was on board.
The Complex Relationship of Ian & Poppy
“It’s like a band who you find out hate each other, but they make this beautiful music together.”

Screen Rant: This season, Ian and Poppy must collaborate closely, though they struggle with it. What makes their partnership effective despite their differences?
Rob McElhenney: Their relationship is intriguing because both characters recognize the necessity of each other while struggling to admit it. In fact, we established this dynamic in the pilot episode. Although they may not always see eye to eye, their deep connection allows them to create remarkable work together, much like a band that doesn’t get along but produces breathtaking music. Their relationship dynamics add layers of complexity to their characters.
Charlotte Nicdao’s Pregnancy: A Unique Opportunity for Storytelling
“Now, this gives us an opportunity to write to it, and it gives us so much more to write about.”

Screen Rant: How did the time jump mid-season enhance the narrative?
Rob McElhenney: The decision was influenced heavily by real-life dynamics. Just like with previous instances on Sunny, Charlotte’s pregnancy was initially a concern for how it would impact our storytelling. However, when she informed us of the wonderful news, we viewed it as a narrative boon. It allowed us not only to accommodate her situation but also to deepen the story’s complexity in the latter portion of the season, providing rich material for character development.
Explosive Finale for Mythic Quest Season 4
“I feel like it’ll be really fun for people to finally see it.”

Screen Rant: The anticipation for the season finale is intense. Can you tease what makes it so compelling?
Rob McElhenney: It’s exciting to learn that viewers are eager for the finale. I understand their anticipation because the concluding episode comes with astounding revelations. I genuinely believe audiences will find it immensely enjoyable.
