Warning: SPOILERS ahead for 9-1-1: Lone Star season 5, episode 12!
In the series finale of 9-1-1: Lone Star, Rob Lowe has provided insights into his character Owen Strand’s journey and the reasoning behind the conclusion of his storyline. The climax of season 5 features the crew of the 126 facing a catastrophic event, attempting to prevent a nuclear reactor meltdown after a destructive asteroid hits Austin, Texas. Although Owen sustains injuries during this crisis, a flash-forward sequence confirms his survival. The twist, however, comes when he chooses to return to New York, leaving Judd (Jim Parrack) to ascend to firefighter captain in his absence.
Owen’s Journey in Texas Comes Full Circle
In a conversation with Variety, Lowe elaborated on Owen’s decision to leave Texas, interpreting it as a sign that his mission was accomplished. From the very beginning, Owen’s objectives were to mend his familial ties, rescue his son, and support the team at 126 in achieving its potential. With these goals fulfilled, he is ready to embark on the next chapter of his life. Below are Lowe’s poignant reflections:
He had completed his mission, his mission of the show, the conceit of the show, and from the very first moment of the pilot, which was: rebuild his family, rescue his son and then rebuild the shattered family of the 126 in Austin. And he leaves the 126 in Austin completely rebuilt, completely functional, a great family — and same for his son. And now it’s time for Owen to go off into, because he’s going East, the sunrise, not the sunset, and build the next chapter of his life.
The Implications of Owen’s Departure

Owen’s presence in 9-1-1: Lone Star was always intended to be temporary, akin to his earlier role in New York, where he was pivotal in rebuilding his own team. Although he found a sense of family within the Texas firehouse, his eventual return to New York was an expected outcome. The series finale, however, treats this transition positively, highlighting how the 126 remains grateful for Owen’s contributions in shaping their community.
While Owen’s departure may evoke feelings of melancholy, the ascent of Judd signifies a renewed sense of hope and progress for the team. This is especially notable considering the hardships faced by characters such as Wyatt (Jackson Pace), who is paralyzed, and Grace (Sierra McClain), whose temporary absence has been challenging. On a brighter note, Tommy (Gina Torres) emerges victorious in her battle against cancer, and TK (Ronen Rubinstein) adopts his stepbrother, Jonah, alongside Carlos (Rafael L. Silva). These uplifting moments at the finale resonate with Owen’s enduring influence, suggesting that the bond he fostered will persist even as he moves on.
