On October 10, 2024, Wonbin, a member of RIIZE, utilized the fan engagement platform Weverse to show his backing for his bandmate Seunghan, who had just announced his comeback after nearly ten months away from the group. Seunghan took his hiatus shortly after the group debuted due to a scandal involving leaked images and videos from before their debut that attracted negative attention in South Korea, leading to the group performing as a six-member unit.
While a considerable number of RIIZE fans, known as BRIIZE, celebrated Seunghan’s return, others voiced their concerns, worried that his past behavior might harm the group’s image. As a form of protest, some fans even sent ‘funeral wreaths’ to the SM Entertainment headquarters.
In his thoughtful post, Wonbin elaborated how the group had engaged in extensive discussions regarding Seunghan’s return.
“I believe BRIIZE has contemplated a lot about whether Seunghan would come back, and why he hasn’t provided a clear answer sooner. We have also engaged in deep discussions with Seunghan and the company. I want everyone to know that the members have deliberated this matter thoroughly together.”
Wonbin reassured fans of the group’s solidarity, acknowledging their uncertainties while confirming that all members and the company carefully weighed the situation. He hoped fans would find solace in the group’s unified approach amidst the surrounding controversy.
Background on RIIZE’s Seunghan and the Incident
The controversy revolved around images purportedly showing Seunghan kissing a woman identified as his ex-girlfriend, alongside footage allegedly depicting him smoking while underage.
On October 11, 2024, SM Entertainment officially announced Seunghan’s return, confirming that he would once again take part in group activities and ensuring fans that RIIZE would continue to deliver exceptional performances and music. The company stated,
“Seunghan will be joining some of the group’s scheduled activities alongside the members, and we will do our utmost to bring you good music and exciting performances. We hope you’ll witness the growth of all the members as they continue to develop.”
The announcement delighted many fans, who quickly took to social media, using the hashtag “#RIIZEIS7″to celebrate the return of the complete lineup. Seunghan also took the time to address the situation directly, penning a heartfelt handwritten letter to fans on Weverse.
In his message, he expressed sorrow over his past actions, extended gratitude to his fellow members and fans for their unwavering support, and committed to earning back their trust through diligence and dedication as an essential part of the group. In his letter, he conveyed,
“Hello, this is Seunghan. First, I want to sincerely apologize to both the members and the fans. When those photos from before my debut surfaced, I felt a deep sense of regret, and I can only imagine how the members and fans felt. You must have been angry, shocked, and disappointed.”
Despite some dissent from a small segment of fans, Seunghan’s return represents a crucial turning point for RIIZE, with both fans and members looking forward to a strong resurgence as a cohesive seven-member unit.
