Rediscovering Xenoblade Chronicles X: A Journey Back to Mira
I found myself revisiting Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition on the Nintendo Switch at an interesting juncture in my life. Having previously completed it, I was eager to dive back in, albeit with some bittersweet memories due to an eye injury that limited my screen time. After a few weeks of recovery and professional responsibilities, I finally seized the opportunity to relive my experiences on the vibrant planet of Mira.

As a Definitive Edition, the game maintains a familiar narrative. It begins with humanity’s escape from an alien menace, leading to the crash of the White Whale on the new world, Mira. Here, the player, alongside the BLADE member Elma, begins to navigate the complexities of survival and community in a foreign land. The journey involves assisting other settlers while unearthing the myriad mysteries surrounding their new environment.
Game Mechanics and Early Exploration
The opening hours of Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition mirror the Wii U version, focusing on acclimatizing players to the world of Mira. The initial chapters are linear, guiding players from their pod’s discovery to the bustling streets of New Los Angeles. However, the game introduces an element of freedom that’s often lacking in standard tutorials. As players begin their adventure, they can choose their paths and explore at their own pace.
While limited at first, the sense of experimentation is encouraged. You can venture off the beaten track to gather materials or challenge local creatures, maximizing your starting Drifter class before officially joining BLADE. This degree of freedom fosters a deeper sense of engagement with the content.
Player Independence and Questing
This return to early chapters accentuated Monolith Soft’s commitment to player agency. Rather than strictly adhering to a predetermined path, players are free to engage with the world as they see fit. The introduction to Divisions is subtle, allowing for organic exploration and the opportunity to try roles like Curator or Reclaimer through practical experience. Completing side quests and initiating Heart-to-Heart events enriches interactions and deepens connections with fellow characters.
Combat Experience and Evolution
As I reacquainted myself with the game, I noted a newfound appreciation for its combat system, especially when compared to more recent mainline entries. While it operates on mechanics reminiscent of MMOs—where characters auto-attack and players select skills based on cooldowns—the combat remains engaging. The addition of “Soul Voice” responses enhances strategic possibilities, allowing for timely restoration of health and other advantages, contributing to a unique gameplay experience relative to other JRPGs.

Returning to Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition has reaffirmed my admiration for Monolith Soft’s craftsmanship. The game expertly launches players into an expansive, open world while offering them the liberty to forge their paths. From the outset, players are encouraged to explore, unravel local secrets, and undertake side quests, fostering a rich and immersive experience within the world of Mira.
