Review of The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak 2

Nihon Falcom’s The Legend of Heroes franchise represents a significant landmark in the world of JRPGs, distinguishing itself through a vast, interconnected narrative that few of its peers, such as Square Enix’s Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy or Bandai Namco’s Tales series, can claim. This narrative complexity presents a unique challenge: while long-time fans enjoy the series’ depth, new players might feel overwhelmed by the prospect of investing over 1, 000 hours into various titles spanning different console generations to fully understand the story’s developments on the continent of Zemuria.

As the appeal of the series in North America has surged, Nihon Falcom has made significant strides in localizing content, keeping the global audience updated. The latest installment, The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak 2, released in 2022, is a direct continuation that unfolds just months after the first chapter of the Trails series’ Calvard arc.

Trails Through Daybreak 2 illustrates a classic “Catch-22″scenario. While it enhances the gameplay experience with refinements to the previous installment’s systems, its reliance on familiar story themes may deter newcomers. Yet, even without comprehensive knowledge of the overarching plot, players can engage with its rich, character-driven content centered around a captivating detective mystery.

Though it does not radically alter the established gameplay mechanics, Trails Through Daybreak 2 promises a robust JRPG experience with intricate combat, progression systems, customizable elements, and an extensive amount of content that fans will relish.

Enhancements over Its Predecessor: A Conservative Approach

Combat Mechanics

The initial installment of Trails Through Daybreak made notable strides in combat mechanics, and in its sequel, the developers have wisely chosen not to overhaul a successful formula, but rather to build upon it. Players can expect significant combat engagement as they transition between Field Battles and Command Battles. In Field Battles, players navigate through the world, engaging in real-time combat through attacks, dodging, and utilizing arts. A new feature, the Cross Charge ability, allows players to capitalize on carefully-timed dodges to stun enemies, adding excitement to encounters.

Once enemies are stunned, players can switch to Command Battles, which employ the familiar turn-based tactics for which the series is known. Players will utilize regular attacks, Arts (powered by their Orbments’ Holo-core and Arts Drivers), and unique character-specific abilities called Crafts. Although spamming powerful attacks may yield short-term success, mastering character synergies and employing debuffs will become integral as the game progresses. Players will encounter relatively easy minor enemies, but the real challenge lies in strategically overcoming formidable bosses that truly test their combat prowess.

Understanding the updated Orbment system is vital to enjoying the combat mechanics in Trails Through Daybreak 2. This revised system allows players to slot Quartz into their Holo-cores, generating an array of combat buffs and status effects while making resource management vital as they regenerate EP and CP during battles. While the tutorials provide a brief overview, players may need to invest time to fully grasp the system’s complexity. However, the rewarding progression system and the new Märchen Garten dungeon, which offers opportunities for grinding and leveling, incentivize players to hone their skills and reap substantial rewards.

The Return of Mini-Games: A Fun Diversion

Despite the innovative enhancements of the first Trails Through Daybreak, it notably lacked mini-games and side activities. Fortunately, Trails Through Daybreak 2 reintroduces a variety of optional mini-games. Some are story-related, like a hacking mini-game for unlocking chests, while others offer light-hearted fun. A particularly engaging element is the fishing mini-game, allowing players to upgrade their gear and bait to catch rare fish, potentially unlocking powerful Quartz to aid in battle.

Leveraging a New Engine for Improved Presentation

Visuals in Trails Through Daybreak 2

Trails Through Daybreak 2 showcases impressive visual enhancements and audio design that complement the game’s engaging gameplay. Following the pivotal transition to its new proprietary engine from the PhyreEngine, the graphical fidelity, cutscene direction, and environmental design have seen significant improvements. The diverse architecture of the Republic of Calvard vividly reflects a melding of Euro-centric and Japanese styles, enriching the world-building and helping players immerse themselves in a believable, living environment.

The audio complements the visuals seamlessly, with the soundtrack meeting the high expectations set by Nihon Falcom’s previous works in the Trails and Ys series. Both Japanese and English voice acting further elevate the narrative, enhancing the characters’ depth and supporting the series’ reputation for excellent storytelling. Additionally, players can unlock music tracks from the game’s OST through completion of certain challenges, adding another layer of engagement.

A Polarizing Narrative Shift: Focusing on Character Over Plot

In terms of gameplay, Trails Through Daybreak 2 builds on its predecessor without major upheavals. While initial reactions to the first game’s changes were mixed, many fans gradually embraced the new mechanics, setting solid expectations for this sequel. However, its narrative may create division among players, as it serves as a middle segment of the Calvard arc, often diverting from the overarching Legends of Heroes storyline.

The plot picks up just three months post-first game, featuring protagonist Van Arkride and his assistant Agnès. When a series of mysterious murders implicate Van as a suspect, assistance from a familiar Bracer Guild ally helps them untangle the clues linked to the ominous “Almata’s Legacy.”Although this setup successfully reacquaints players with beloved characters, much of the plot revisits major developments from the prior title without advancing toward a climax, which may frustrate those anticipating significant progression.

Traditionally, sequels in the Legend of Heroes series ramp up the stakes, leading to crucial plot developments. Yet, Trails Through Daybreak 2 often feels like an extension of the first installment rather than a true sequel, which could irk players eager for escalated narrative momentum.

Conversely, the game excels in character depth, spending ample time exploring backgrounds and motives, paving the way for a nuanced understanding of alliance and opposition among characters. This focus on personal stories adds rich layers to the narrative, providing both old and new players with a satisfying entry point into the franchise. The included “Archive”feature further assists newcomers, offering essential glossaries, character dossiers, and a comprehensive timeline of series events.

A New Journey Awaits: An Engaging Experience for All Players

Nihon Falcom has crafted a compelling sequel in Trails Through Daybreak 2. While it may not accelerate the Calvard arc toward its conclusion as some fans hoped, the emphasis on character relations and personal stakes delivers a fulfilling narrative experience. Despite the challenges of detailing the extensive franchise history within the game, the developers have implemented thoughtful features to bridge gaps for newcomers.

With around 90 hours of gameplay, Trails Through Daybreak 2 is poised to captivate both dedicated fans and those new to the series. Those who may have previously overlooked the Trails games might find themselves won over after this entry, making it a title well worth recommending.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak 2 will be available on February 14, 2025, for PC, PS4, PS5, and Switch. Game Rant received a PS5 code for this review.
