Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Severance season 2, episode 1. The highly anticipated Severance season 2 has finally premiered, and it successfully meets the high expectations set by its predecessor. Released in 2022, the first season left audiences craving more, but the Hollywood strikes in 2023 caused delays in production. This gap in airing can sometimes diminish viewer interest, particularly for newer shows. Fortunately, Severance has masterfully integrated its in-universe changes, ensuring a seamless transition into the new season.
An Insightful Return: The Changed World of Severance
Adam Scott’s Mark S.: A Charismatic Journey
The premiere episode of season 2 focuses on expanding the narrative established in its first chapter. The cliffhanger ending of season 1 saw Mark, Helly, Dylan, and Irving devising a plan to uncover the disturbing truths concerning Lumon’s severed workforce. Among the shocking revelations, Helly discovers that her Outie is the daughter of Lumon’s CEO, while Mark uncovers that his presumed-deceased wife, Gemma, is alive and serving as Ms. Casey, the company’s wellness head.
Initially, I felt the pacing of the first half of the episode was slower than expected, especially following the thrilling finale of season 1. After Milchick intervenes to halt the overtime contingency, I anticipated dramatic developments for our beloved characters. The season 2 opener does an excellent job of gradually illustrating the aftermath of the turmoil at Lumon, with Milchick revealing that the Macrodata Refinement team blew the whistle, leading to significant changes at the corporation.
Despite the slow-building storyline, Adam Scott’s portrayal of Mark S. keeps viewers engaged. Scott’s ability to differentiate between the character’s Innie and Outie versions shines through, as he brings both charm and urgency to Mark’s journey to retrieve his team. This twist of Mark meeting an entirely new group instead of his familiar friends adds depth, showcasing his determination to reunite with his crew.

Helly’s Promising Arc in Season 2

Having Helly, Irving, and Dylan back together evokes nostalgia as the characters regain their dynamic from season 1. It’s fascinating to see them navigate the changes at Lumon while sharing their experiences during the switch with their Outies. Although both Irving and Helly hold back some details from their time outside, Britt Lower’s Helly appears poised for an intriguing arc this season, particularly as she struggles with her identity as an Eagan.
This raises the pressing question of whether the team will be able to trust Helly again. As her Outie represents the very system they oppose, her dual existence creates a complex narrative. While I understand her hesitation to disclose the truth to Mark and the others right now, there’s a growing concern about the repercussions of her secret remaining hidden for too long. This tension is a narrative thread I eagerly hope will be explored as the season progresses.
Overall, the season 2 premiere of Severance sets a strong foundation. The slower first half is a thoughtful reintroduction to the show, allowing audiences to reacquaint themselves with the altered Lumon. Once the crew reunites, the pace quickens, laying out an engaging web of mysteries meant to unfold throughout the season. The balance between answering critical questions about Lumon and fostering character development makes a compelling start.
The first episode of Severance season 2 is now available on Apple TV+, with new episodes dropping every Friday until March 21.
