In a surprising turn of events, Capcom has announced the discontinuation of the underwhelming multiplayer title Resident Evil Re:Verse, barely three years after its launch. Initially released in October 2022 as a complimentary addition for players who purchased Resident Evil Village, the game was not available for standalone purchase. Intended to debut alongside Village, Re:Verse encountered significant delays following its beta testing, ultimately launching a year later with the game’s DLC.
According to a message shared on the official RE_Games account on X, Resident Evil Re:Verse will be removed from digital platforms on March 3, 2025. Furthermore, the game’s online services will cease entirely on June 29, 2025, marking the end of all development and maintenance efforts. Consequently, Re:Verse will no longer be playable in any official capacity, and following its removal, players will not receive it for free with copies of Village or its DLCs.
We regret to share that we will be ending all service and support for Resident Evil Re:Verse on June 29, 2025. Thank you to the Re:Verse players over the last few years! For more details and a schedule of the closure: https://t.co/z0JFdF1dSO — Resident Evil (@RE_Games) February 6, 2025
Analyzing the Downfall of Resident Evil Re:Verse
Gameplay, Balance, & Monetization Issues

Despite its aspirations of honoring the 25th anniversary of the Resident Evil franchise, upon release, Re:Verse faced considerable backlash. Many players expressed dissatisfaction with its gameplay mechanics, lack of content, and the game’s heavy monetization strategies, which included a premium battle pass and microtransactions for character skins.
The fact that Re:Verse was exclusively accessible as an additional game with Resident Evil Village significantly restricted its potential player base. It functioned as a six-player hero shooter, allowing players to choose from notable characters such as Chris, Claire, Jill, Leon, Ada, and HUNK, with the unique twist of transforming into Resident Evil monsters upon being defeated.
However, the game’s initial poor reception and lack of subsequent updates led to its quick decline in popularity. As reported by Steam Charts, the player base—a dismal peak of just over 2, 000—has dwindled to nearly negligible figures. Recent news on the impending closure momentarily increased player counts but only peaked at about 55 players in a 24-hour period.
A Strategic Decision for the Resident Evil Franchise
PVP Games and the Resident Evil Identity

While the complete shutdown of Re:Verse presents concerns regarding game preservation, its lack of popularity suggests it won’t be significantly missed. Scheduled for removal from digital storefronts on March 3, 2025, and offline operations ending on June 29, the fate of Resident Evil Re:Verse may guide the franchise to reconsider its approach to multiplayer gaming or inspire the creation of a more compelling multiplayer experience in the future.
