CAPCOM Celebrates Major Success with Resident Evil 4 Remake
This morning, Japanese gaming giant CAPCOM made headlines by revealing that the Resident Evil 4 remake has achieved a remarkable milestone, surpassing nine million copies sold since its launch in late March 2023. This achievement is particularly noteworthy given that the game closely mirrors the acclaimed 2005 original in terms of content.
Sales Milestones
The journey to nine million units has been rapid. Within just two days of its release, three million copies flew off the shelves. By early April 2023, the game had crossed the four-million mark, and by late July 2023, sales reached five million. CAPCOM released a significant update during the game’s first anniversary, at which point total sales had climbed to over seven million copies.
Critical Reception
The remake has generally received positive feedback from critics, despite some mixed reviews. Our own reviewer, Nathan Birch, highlighted his reservations but still awarded it a commendable score of 8.5 out of 10. He commented:
Now, I have to say, while the tone of the last few paragraphs has been a bit negative, whether we’re talking about the original or the remake, Resident Evil 4 is still a very good game. I may be a bit disappointed by the scope and ambition of Capcom’s reimagining, but RE4 is still one of the most inventive and engaging action-horror games ever made, and this is a competent, technically-impressive new version of the game. The village battle may be largely the same, but it still gets your blood pumping. Same goes for the cabin defense sequence, your showdown with the village chief, or your first encounter with a Regenerator. The Resident Evil 4 remake is still a fun, bombastic dose of mayhem, I just feel like it had the potential to be even better. It also suffers from the fact that Resident Evil Village was, in some ways, the bigger, crazier take on RE4 that this remake could have been.
Future Developments in the Resident Evil Franchise
Looking ahead, 2025 is poised to be a pivotal year for the Resident Evil series, particularly regarding forthcoming announcements. Speculations suggest that Resident Evil 9 may make its debut, possibly slated for a late 2025 release. Rumors abound that the new installment will draw inspiration from the atmospheric elements of Resident Evil 4, while introducing two formidable ‘unkillable stalkers’ reminiscent of Nemesis from Resident Evil 3.
Furthermore, fans are buzzing about the potential return of iconic characters from the franchise, including Jill Valentine (from Resident Evil 1, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 5) and Leon Kennedy (featured in Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 4, and Resident Evil 6).
