Recent reports indicate that flagship chipsets from Snapdragon and MediaTek could see price increases of around 20%-30% compared to their predecessors. This trend may lead to smartphone manufacturers raising the prices of their premium devices.
A notable example of this trend is the recently launched Samsung Galaxy S24 FE, which is powered by an in-house Exynos 2400e chip instead of the standard Exynos 2400 processor found in the Galaxy S24 and S24+ models in select regions.
While many specifics regarding the Galaxy S24 FE’s Exynos 2400e chip remain undisclosed, a recent ray tracing performance test revealed compelling findings. The test indicated that the Exynos 2400e-equipped Galaxy S24 FE outperformed the iPhone 16, which is equipped with Apple’s A18 chipset.
The Exynos 2400e is reportedly built on Samsung’s 4nm fabrication process, while Apple’s A18 chipset uses TSMC’s 3nm architecture. Despite the Exynos 2400e having a marginally lower core frequency than the Exynos 2400, this adjustment has not significantly affected its performance.
In the 3DMark’s Solar Bay ray tracing performance test, the Samsung Galaxy S24 FE achieved a score of 8242 points, surpassing Apple’s A18 processor, which scored 6691 points. In comparison, the Galaxy S24’s Exynos 2400 processor scored 8743 points.
The performance results position the Samsung Galaxy S24 FE as an intriguing choice for consumers, especially considering its launch price of $650 for the 8/128GB variant. In contrast, the standard Galaxy S24 was priced at $800 upon release, and the S24+ (12/256GB) retailed for $1,000. Therefore, buyers are getting nearly 90%-95% of the Exynos 2400’s performance for a significantly lower price.
Furthermore, when compared to the iPhone 16 with its A18 processor, the Galaxy S24 FE falls into the affordable flagship smartphone category, while the iPhone 16 is considered a true flagship. Looking ahead, the forthcoming Galaxy S25 Ultra, set to debut with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 processor, is anticipated to challenge Apple’s CPU performance.
