Cat Glover Had Previously Spoken About How Prince’s Music Helped Her Through Depression
Cat Glover first gained recognition through her participation in Star Search, but she had been an admirer of Prince even before their collaboration. She was especially inspired by his 1980 album Dirty Mind.
In a 2016 interview with the Chicago Crusader, Glover shared that Prince’s music significantly aided her during tough times. She reflected:
“The only thing that got me through my depression was listening to Prince’s album, *Dirty Mind*. I knew I had to meet him. That was my inner self speaking.”
This wasn’t the first instance of Cat Glover expressing her deep admiration for the musical legend. In a 1987 interview with Video Soul, she mentioned that she had “always idolized him”and referred to Prince as “great.”
She also reminisced about witnessing Prince in the studio, awestruck by his talent, saying, ‘My God, he’s incredible, he really is.’
Regarding her experiences dancing with Prince, Glover explained to Housequake in 2006 that the singer initially approached her to dance alongside him, later asking if she “wanted to join the group.”
Joining Prince’s band in 1986, Glover contributed both choreography and dance performances to the Sign o’ the Times concert film. She also toured with the group during Prince’s Lovesexy Tour in 1988.
In addition to her dance role, Glover made her mark by rapping on Prince’s hit “Alphabet St.”Just before her rap, Prince could be heard calling out, “Cat, we need you to rap.”She also appeared in the music video for the 1987 hit single “U Got the Look,”where she was famously seen pulling Prince high up on the stage.
Cat Glover departed from Prince’s band in 1989 to chase a solo career, releasing her album Catwoman that same year.
She is survived by three daughters and a son.
