Major Update for FBC: Firebreak Enhances Gameplay Experience

In June 2023, Remedy Entertainment made its debut in the world of self-publishing with the release of FBC: Firebreak, a cooperative live service game set in the intertwined universes of Control and Alan Wake. However, the initial reception from players highlighted a few shortcomings, particularly the perceived lack of content and depth in gameplay. Addressing these concerns, the studio has rolled out its first significant update, known as Breakout.

Breakthrough Changes: What’s New in the Breakout Update

The Breakout update is designed to deliver comprehensive overhauls that breathe new life into the game. This package includes fresh content alongside essential quality-of-life enhancements that players have been eagerly requesting.

Crisis Board Revamped

The once-familiar Job Board has now transformed into the Crisis Board, presenting a diverse array of curated missions. This change aims to create a more engaging gameplay experience, making it feel less monotonous and more dynamic. Remedy expresses its intention for these missions to more closely embody the concept of “first-responder” scenarios at the core of the game.

“The Crises use the same objectives Jobs had, but Zones 1-2 have 25% fewer objective requirements than before, ”explains Remedy.“On top of that, we want to make Crises more unpredictable, which is why each Crisis currently has two unique Alternative Objectives that can pop up randomly during Zones 1 and 2. These replace the primary objective of the Crisis, so whereas before the mission flow was always the same, there should be a bit more variety and surprise in how Crises progress.”

Introducing Outbreak: A New Mission Type

The update also introduces a fresh mission type called Outbreak, which involves a mold phenomenon impacting both Hiss and Firebreakers. Players will face the challenge of transporting fragile spores, either manually or via train, into research machinery to prevent them from being consumed accidentally.

New Armaments and Customization Options

Players can now equip themselves with three new heavy weapons: the Scattergun, a semi-automatic rifle, and a rotary cannon. Additionally, the update features a new weapon modification system, enabling players to upgrade and personalize their arms. Options include mods that knock back enemies upon impact, deal increased damage at close range, or inflict more damage the more bullets are fired before reloading.

Enhanced Onboarding Experience for New Players

To assist newcomers, an Orientation tutorial level has been introduced, simplifying the learning curve. Furthermore, several introductory videos provide insights into various mission types and the game’s lore.

What Lies Ahead: Future Updates and Events

Looking ahead, Remedy is gearing up for a major update named Rogue Protocol, scheduled for late November. This update is set to introduce an Endless Shift roguelike mode, alongside voice chat support and armor sets reminiscent of Control. December will focus on balance improvements, with another substantial update planned for March 2026, which will include a new Crisis Kit and enhancements to Crisis Kit synergies.

Moreover, FBC: Firebreak is currently participating in the ongoing Steam Autumn Sale, offering a 30% discount for the upcoming week. Make sure to check it out!
