Following the initial reports regarding the delay, DC Chief James Gunn confirmed via Threads that the script is still unfinished, necessitating this rescheduling. Gunn made it clear that the postponement stems from development stages rather than any loss of faith in the project. He emphasized the importance of having a completed script before moving to the production phase, which takes substantial time.
“Matt is committed to making the best film he possibly can, and no one can accurately guess exactly how long a script will take to write. Once there is a finished script, there is around two years for pre-production, shooting and post-production on big films.”
This update isn’t entirely unexpected; rumors of delays have circulated since early fall, and some unfounded speculations hinted at potential cancellation. However, such notions seemed implausible given the popularity of The Penguin, a spin-off series performing well on HBO Max. While there were efforts from both Gunn and Reeves to quash rumors of a cancellation, the delay had become more apparent.
