Minecraft’s immense popularity since its release is well-known, with millions of players enjoying its block-building adventure across the globe. The continuous addition of new content by the developers helps to refresh the gaming experience, yet the core mechanics have remained largely unchanged, leading some players to find it monotonous over time. This is where Reforj, developed by 4J Studios, enters the scene, delivering a Minecraft-inspired experience presented in a fresh format.
4J Studios, famous for successfully porting Minecraft to consoles and various handheld devices, is now working on its own distinctive title, heavily influenced by Mojang’s iconic game. Here’s a closer look at Reforj and what you can anticipate from it.
Is Reforj a spiritual successor to Minecraft?
Recently, 4J Studios shared some exciting artwork from their forthcoming game on social media, generating significant buzz among fans and increasing anticipation for an official launch. Additionally, a developer provided valuable insights in a recent interview, including information about the expected early access for Reforj.
What distinguishes Reforj?
Reforj integrates numerous elements reminiscent of Minecraft, such as open-world exploration, resource gathering, and base building. However, it sets itself apart with several unique gameplay features that enhance its appeal.
One standout feature is the innovative sculpting tool, which expands building possibilities. The developers have also designed a specialized game engine that enhances world generation, minimizes loading times, locks gameplay at 60 fps, and incorporates advanced physics simulations.
The game will feature a vast 4-kilometer square world, allowing players to traverse seamlessly without encountering the invisible walls typical in Minecraft—crossing the boundary will lead players to re-enter from the opposite side. Players can also customize a flat world for their adventures. Furthermore, Reforj will have the option to switch between first-person and third-person views, mirroring Minecraft’s versatility.
While the visuals shown are early concepts, developers are committed to continuous improvement based on player feedback, which can be shared through the game’s official Discord channel.
Release timeline, platform compatibility, and multiplayer features
Reforj is set to launch on all contemporary gaming platforms, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, and PC. Developers anticipate releasing a closed alpha version in early 2025; however, this timeline may be subject to delays.
This alpha iteration will include most essential features, such as a Survival mode complete with hunger mechanics, enemy mobs, and resource collection. While many features will have limitations, Creative mode will be introduced in subsequent updates.
Peer-to-peer multiplayer support will be available, but server-side hosting by the developers will not be included at launch. Additional minigames will also be introduced later in the development process.
