RedOctane Games: A New Era for Rhythm Gaming
Exciting developments are underway as the former developers behind the iconic CRKD guitars and the beloved Guitar Hero and DJ Hero franchises unite to launch RedOctane Games. This newly formed studio, now in full production, is gearing up to unveil its first title, anticipated to debut in 2025.
Legacy of RedOctane: A Brief History
The name RedOctane may evoke nostalgia for many, as the original RedOctane Inc.collaborated with Harmonix to create the first Guitar Hero in 2005. This collaboration continued with Guitar Hero II before the studio was acquired by Activision in 2006. Under this new ownership, RedOctane issued successful titles such as Guitar Hero III and Guitar Hero World Tour, showcasing their expertise alongside Neversoft. However, the studio faced challenges, leading to its closure amidst widespread layoffs in 2010.
New Beginnings and Leadership
With the emergence of RedOctane Games, former industry veterans are stepping into key roles. The studio is led by Simon Ebejer, who has been integral to the Guitar Hero series since Guitar Hero III and most recently held the position of Vice President of Operations for the Diablo franchise at Blizzard. Co-founders Charles and Kai Huang, who established RedOctane Inc.back in 1999, are also back on board, serving as advisors to the new venture.

Innovative Approaches to Rhythm Gaming
The announcement of RedOctane Games highlights a diverse talent pool, comprising individuals experienced in the rhythm game genre, as well as emerging developers and community leaders. While details about the first title remain under wraps, the team asserts that they are exploring various innovative experiences that extend beyond traditional gameplay.
In a statement, Ebejer emphasized the fundamental essence of rhythm games: “Rhythm games are about more than just gameplay; they encompass feel, flow, and connection to the music and to one another.” He reinforced the studio’s mission to advance and reinvigorate a genre that holds significant meaning for them.
A New Vision for Rhythm Gaming
The press release also hints at a distinctive direction for their upcoming project. According to a blog post by Lee Guinchard, this game strives to pave a new path in rhythm gaming, steering away from the familiar formulas of titles like Guitar Hero, DJ Hero, and others. Guinchard articulates the aim for a game created with passion and a genuine community focus, seeking input from the very individuals who have kept rhythm gaming alive.
As anticipation builds for RedOctane Games’ debut title, it’s clear that rhythm games continue to hold an important place in the gaming landscape. While the industry has evolved past the days of multiple plastic instruments dominating our living rooms, the potential for fresh, engaging rhythm experiences remains strong. Fans eagerly await further details throughout 2025 as RedOctane embarks on this exciting journey.
