The realm of DDR5 memory has reached an unprecedented milestone, with overclockers successfully surpassing the 13, 000 MT/s threshold, specifically on the Gigabyte Z890 AORUS Tachyon motherboard.
SaltyCroissant Sets New 13, 000 MT/s DDR5 Overclock Record on Gigabyte Z890 AORUS Tachyon ICE
Recently, a remarkable DDR5 memory frequency world record was achieved by the Canadian overclocker, SaltyCroissant. Utilizing the Gigabyte Z890 AORUS Tachyon ICE motherboard, alongside Corsair’s DDR5 Vengeance memory and an Intel Core Ultra 7 265K CPU, SaltyCroissant’s accomplishment is a significant collaboration involving other prominent overclockers such as Gigabyte’s HiCookie, Corsair’s Sofos, and Splave.

For this record-setting feat, the entire upper section of the motherboard, comprising the CPU and DDR5 DIMM slots, was subjected to chilling via liquid nitrogen (LN2) pots. The Gigabyte Z890 AORUS Tachyon ICE motherboard serves as a flagship model tailored for overclocking and boasts two DDR5 DIMM slots. Earlier this year, it set a DDR5 overclock record of 12, 726 MT/s, making the leap over the 13, 000 MT/s mark a challenging yet thrilling pursuit.
SaltyCroissant officially validated a maximum frequency of 12, 920.2 MT/s, eclipsing the previous record of 12, 872.2 MT/s held by the ASUS ROG Maximus Z890 APEX motherboard. This new achievement represents an impressive 2.69 times increase over the standard JEDEC speeds of 4800 MT/s for DDR5 memory.

In an unofficial capacity, SaltyCroissant revealed another configuration from the same testing setup, where the DDR5 DRAM reportedly ran at 6510 MHz or 13, 020 MT/s, marking a more than 2.7 times boost from the standard JEDEC speeds. Achieving these remarkable frequencies required loosening the timings significantly, as seen on the CPU-Z panel showing CL68 mode with timings set to 128-128-256-1500-2T. While this configuration may not be optimal for typical application performance, it is essential for reaching such extraordinary overclocking figures.
Moreover, Gigabyte is also advancing its technology by working towards CAMM2 support for its flagship overclocking motherboard. A Z890 AORUS Tachyon ICE CAMM2 was showcased at Computex this year. While mainstream adoption of CAMM2 might still be on the horizon, certain overclocking-oriented motherboards could incorporate this new standard to demonstrate enhanced overclocking capabilities and potentially achieve even better frequency results.
