Recap of Shark Tank Season 16 Episode 2: Four Entrepreneurs Pitch to Guest Shark Todd Graves
The 16th season of Shark Tank kicked off on October 18, 2024, followed by its second episode, which aired on ABC on October 25, 2024. This iconic series showcases a panel of investors, commonly referred to as sharks, who aid both aspiring and established entrepreneurs by providing financial support to help them advance their businesses.
Shark Tank debuted as the American version of the British show, Dragon’s Den, premiering on August 9, 2009. It features prominent investors like Kevin O’Leary, Lori Greiner, Daymond John, and Mark Cuban, the latter of whom has announced his departure from the series following season 16. Occasionally, the series introduces guest sharks in certain episodes to offer diverse insights and improve the likelihood of securing investments for the entrepreneurs.
The recent episode highlighted pitches from companies including Top Sail Steamer, Life Raft Treats, BucketGolf, and RigStrips. Entrepreneurs presented their innovative ideas to Todd Graves, the CEO of Raising Canes’ Chicken Fingers, along with the sharks, with the hope of obtaining financial backing.
What transpired in Shark Tank season 16 episode 2?
In the episode titled “Chicken Scoop Adventure,”CEO Danielle Mahon introduced her company, Top Sail Steamer, proposing a request for $350,000 in exchange for an 8% equity stake. Danielle started her seafood steaming venture in 2017 after securing a $57,000 loan.
She recounted her childhood memories of enjoying seafood dinners with her family while the seafood steamed in the background. The sharks drilled Danielle on her business operations, to which she responded that her company ships products nationwide and operates eight physical locations, anticipating sales of $5.7 million this year.
Todd immediately countered with an offer of $350,000 for a 20% stake, and Lori expressed her interest to partner with him, suggesting they split the stake equally. After some back and forth negotiating, Danielle settled on an agreement of a 9% equity stake to be shared between Todd and Lori.
Next to present were Cynthia and John David, the duo behind Life Raft Treats, who sought $250,000 for a 5% share in their venture. Disguised as a fried chicken supplier, the sharks quickly discovered that what they were sampling was actually ice cream.
The creators of Life Raft Treats revealed their diverse product line, which mimics savory dishes while actually being filled with ice cream. However, the sharks were deterred by the fact that the company only earned 5% on $1.5 million in sales last year, ultimately leading them to decline any investment.
Then Steven Graf and Zhach Pham introduced their company, RigStrips, seeking $300,000 for a 7.5% equity stake. Their product is designed for sports lovers who need a way to secure their skis and snowboards using a unique magnetic bar.
With Todd’s passion for fishing and skiing, he instantly offered $300,000 for a 20% stake. As the remaining sharks opted to withdraw, Todd and Rig Strips finalized the deal for $300,000 but at a 15% equity share. Following the agreement, Zach expressed his exhilaration at teaming up with Todd, believing the investment would elevate their business to new heights.
“We’re in a little bit of shock. We really wanted Todd. He’s a fisher, he’s a hunter. Raising Canes’ is doing one thing right, and that’s exactly the explosive growth we need,”said Zach.
Finally, the last pitch of the episode came from Tyler Simmons and his sister, Jenny Simmons, who presented their affordable backyard golf game company, BucketGolf. They initially sought $1 million for a 10% stake. The sharks were stunned to learn that BucketGolf had achieved $12 million in revenue last year, with profits around 15%.
Kevin and Daymond proposed $1 million for a 25% share, emphasizing the necessity of involving distributors for business expansion. Lori raised the ante with an offer of $1 million for a 22.5% stake, while Mark Cuban offered the same amount for a 12.5% stake. The co-founders of BucketGolf ultimately accepted Mark’s proposal.
