Seoul Busters Episodes 7 & 8 Recap: Jeong-hwan’s Redemption and the Squad’s Success in a Complicated Kidnapping Case
Episode 7 kicks off with a flashback to Jeong Jeong-hwan’s (Seo Hyun-woo) past. Donned in his shooting gear, he takes aim at the target, only to later learn via Mu Jung-ryeok’s (Park Ji-hwan) recounting to Jang Tan-sik (Lee Seung-woo) that Jeong-hwan missed.
The scene transitions to the country’s least effective detective squad pursuing a suspect. Jeong-hwan points his weapon but hesitates to fire.
This episode delves deeper into Jeong-hwan’s life. The squad gathers for his housewarming dinner, where they meet his wife and four daughters. Subsequently, Mu Jung-ryeok shares Jeong-hwan’s backstory with Jang Tan-sik. Jeong-hwan met his wife during their training for national teams—he for shooting and she for table tennis.
Although both aspired for medals, their paths changed after hitting setbacks. When his wife became pregnant, they got married, prompting Jeong-hwan to abandon his Olympic aspirations in favor of joining the police academy to provide for his family.
The squad soon faces a new case involving a young girl named Yoona, who vanished after school. They gather information, revealing that her uncle, who typically picks her up from the bus, was missing the day she was taken.
After examining CCTV footage, the team concludes a man had specifically targeted Yoona. They learn Yoona’s father, Choo Yong-jin, is a YouTuber known for exposing bait-and-switch scams and suspects one of his exposed scammers may be behind the kidnapping.
Led by Dongbang Yu-bin (Kim Dong-wook), the squad interrogates the scam artists, finding all but Yoon Seohun with solid alibis. Yoon Seohun stands out as the primary suspect due to his criminal past and gang affiliations. As news of the kidnapping spreads, the case garners widespread attention.
Meanwhile, the Seoul Busters team receives a ransom note delivered alongside a cake to Yoona’s parents. The delivery woman provided a caricatured drawing of the kidnapper, which only added humor and confusion.
Mu Jung-ryeok remains adamant that Yoon Seohun is the kidnapper and decides to summon him. However, Yu-bin uncovers that Yoon Seohun is colorblind, thus ruling him out as a suspect since the ransom note featured colorful cutouts. Yu-bin also suspects the kidnapper might be a woman. At the end of episode 7, the case catches the eye of higher authorities, resulting in the squad being relieved from it. A specialized investigation team takes over.
In episode 8 of Seoul Busters, despite their removal from the case, the squad persists in their investigation under Yu-bin’s direction. Yu-bin and Seo Min-seo (Park Se-wan) attend Choo Yong-jin’s school reunion, where a comedic misunderstanding leads Min-seo to inadvertently join a dance battle.
While Min-seo entertains the crowd, Yu-bin discreetly gathers intel, uncovering that Choo Yong-jin had a dark reputation as a notorious bully. One of his victims suffered from the trauma to the point of falling into a coma for 13 years and had just passed away three months prior.
The squad shifts their focus to the victim’s sister, Mi-jeong, who works at a hotel. They identify a 60% match between her and the kidnapper in the CCTV footage.
Meanwhile, the special investigation team homed in on Yoon Seohun after finding his fingerprints on the ransom note. Although the squad posed resistance, Jeong-hwan faced an internal conflict. He wrestled with the decision to disclose Yoon Seohun’s colorblindness, risking betrayal against his own team, but ultimately chose silence.
The special team moved to arrest Yoon Seohun while Yu-bin dispatched Mu Jung-ryeok and Jeong-hwan to apprehend Mi-jeong. In the confrontation, Mi-jeong attempted to escape and injured Jeong-hwan, but Mu Jung-ryeok intervened. Jeong-hwan showcased his sharpshooting, disabling her vehicle by shooting a tire.
Following her arrest, Mi-jeong admitted to the kidnapping, revealing her motive was to make Choo Yong-jin feel the anguish she endured from losing her brother. While she intended to end her life along with Yoona, she ultimately couldn’t follow through.
Yoona was safely returned to her family. As Mi-jeong was taken away, Choo Yong-jin offered his apologies for his past actions, and both characters broke down in tears.
In the final scene of episode 8 of Seoul Busters, the specialized investigation team departed, much to the relief and joy of Yu-bin’s squad.
Episodes 9 and 10 of Seoul Busters will be available for streaming on Disney+ from 12:30 PM IST on October 2, 2024, and 4 PM KST.
