The Rookie: Feds was a police procedural drama series developed by Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter, serving as a spin-off of the original series The Rookie. The show focused on Simone Clark becoming the oldest rookie in the FBI at the age of 48. Executive producers included notable names such as Nathan Fillion, Bill Norcross, Bibby Dunn, Michelle Chapman, and Niecy Nash.
The Rookie: Feds premiered its first season on September 27, 2022, concluding on May 2, 2023, on ABC. According to the show synopsis on Rotten Tomatoes, it states:
“Special Agent Simone Clark, the oldest rookie in the FBI Academy, is assigned to support the Los Angeles field office.”
Sadly, The Rookie: Feds was canceled in November 2023, driven by factors such as industry economics, consolidation, and the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strikes.
Exploration of Reasons Behind The Rookie: Feds Cancellation
The concept for The Rookie: Feds was initially introduced during season 4 of the original series through a two-episode backdoor pilot that aired in 2022. In this pilot, trainee Simone Clark assists John Nolan and his team in solving a terrorism case.
Over its run, the series included 22 episodes, and its cancellation occurred in November 2023, roughly six months after its season finale.
In February 2024, showrunner Alexi Hawley addressed the cancellation at the Television Critics Tour, stating:
“A lot had to do with the forces that led to strike … the consolidation of the industry, the economic impact of the streaming wars have had on different companies. I do feel it was not a creative decision. It was a business decision.”
He further elaborated:
“The strike is still fairly close in our rearview mirror. Consolidation is happening across the industry. ABC has been nothing but supportive about The Rookie. Again, The Rookie: Feds was an unfortunate casualty, more of a casualty of the whole process.”
Plot Overview
In this series, Simone Clark, played by Niecy Nash, pursues her dream of becoming an FBI agent at the age of 48 after spending most of her life as a school counselor. Throughout the series, she strives to earn the respect of her superior, Matthew Garza (played by Felix Solis), and her fellow agents, several of whom are skeptical of her abilities.
