The coming-of-age drama series, My Brilliant Friend, made its HBO debut on November 18, 2018, and has unfolded over four engaging seasons, concluding with its final installment on September 9, 2024.

The HBO series, mirroring the novels, chronicles the life journeys of Elena “Lenu”Greco and Rafaella “Lila”Cerullo as they transition from childhood through adulthood and into their later years.
The inaugural season aligns with the original novel’s title, depicting the events in 1950s Naples, where Elena becomes concerned over Lila’s mysterious disappearance, prompting her to document their shared experiences. This season delves into their formative years, from ages six to sixteen.
In the second season, adapted from The Story of a New Name, the focus shifts to Elena’s education and Lila’s tumultuous marriage to Stefano. The narrative reveals the abusive nature of Lila’s relationship, exacerbated by societal views that marginalize her spirited personality. This season also highlights Elena’s developing romantic feelings for Nino Sarratore.
The third season draws from Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay, spotlighting Elena’s impending wedding and her urgent desire to reconnect with Lila in Naples. During this visit, Lila shares shocking revelations about her experience at a bologna factory where she faces harassment. Elena attempts to aid her friend by writing an exposé on the factory’s harsh conditions, all while navigating her own marital struggles with Pietro Airota.
Ultimately, Season 4 adapts The Story of The Lost Child, depicting the unraveling of Elena’s marriage and her entangled affair with Nino. Complications arise with the Solara family as they introduce drug-related issues into the neighborhood, straining the bond between the two friends.
The series reaches a poignant conclusion as Elena moves to Turin, leading to the end of her friendship with Lila. When she discovers Lila’s disappearance, a package arrives containing two childhood dolls, leaving a glimmer of hope about Lila’s fate.
