Hulu has officially announced the cancellation of the acclaimed drama series Black Cake, confirming that it will not be returning for a second season. This decision, made public in September 2024, came approximately ten months after the conclusion of season one. Given Hulu’s extended silence regarding the show’s future, it was anticipated that the cancellation was imminent. Based on Charmaine Wilkerson’s New York Times best-selling novel, Black Cake chronicles the journeys of two siblings as they delve into the mysteries of their family’s history, guided by a series of audio recordings left behind by their mother.

Emerging Patterns in Cancellations

Hulu did not provide any specifics regarding the reasons behind the cancellation of Black Cake. The show had a promising start, consisting of just eight episodes. The disappointment is heightened by the fact that Black Cake had been previously pursued by both Hulu and Netflix, with Hulu ultimately securing the rights. Adding to the frustration, the series ended on a cliffhanger, a common fate for many critically acclaimed yet short-lived shows. The conclusion of the season left Mabel poised to uncover critical information about her father through her mother’s audio recordings.

The abrupt termination means that viewers were denied the resolution they anticipated. Creator and showrunner Marissa Jo Cerar had initially envisioned a three-season arc, emphasizing that the first season only scratched the surface of a much richer narrative (via The Wrap).

Black Cake’s cancellation coincided with Hulu’s decision to cut the series Unprisoned after two seasons. While there has been a push for greater diversity in television, many streaming platforms have fallen short, often terminating shows that spotlight Black voices after just one or two seasons.

Future Narratives and Character Development

Had Black Cake been granted a second season, it likely would have explored Mabel’s quest for further knowledge about her biological father. Marissa Jo Cerar indicated that Mabel’s narrative has much more depth to explore, stating:

“But her story, Mabel’s, we’ve barely scratched the surface of her journey in season one, and her story is so rich, and I’m so excited to give it its due in a proper Season 2 if we get a Season 2…”

Additionally, the upcoming season would have addressed unresolved plot points, such as whether Byron would support raising his child with Lynette. While the possibility exists for Netflix to step in and revive Black Cake, such a move appears unlikely.Despite Netflix’s history of rescuing shows that it previously sought, there have been no reports of them considering Black Cake.

Transitioning a show from one streaming service to another presents significant challenges due to licensing and intellectual property complexities. Most shows that Netflix revives were initially aired on cable networks, which tend to have less complicated distribution rights. Moreover, considering Netflix’s own history of canceling a higher number of shows compared to its competitors, Black Cake could potentially face the same fate if it finds a new home there.
