Reasons Behind Nicki Minaj’s Refusal to Collaborate with City Girls: Analyzing the Hip Hop Duo’s Disses

On February 2, 2022, Nicki Minaj made a guest appearance on The Morning Hustle radio show.

During her interview, Minaj disclosed her initial enthusiasm to collaborate on a track with the City Girls. However, she backed out after coming across some unflattering remarks directed at her from the duo on social media, elaborating:

“It’s a natural reaction to feel a certain way when you hear people have been talking about you—not just once, but repeatedly over time.”

When the host remarked that it’s tough to “move past”such incidents, the rapper of “Anaconda”responded that she had already done so, adding, “But why should I team up with someone who clearly doesn’t like me?”

Let’s explore the series of events that caused Nicki Minaj to feel aggrieved by the City Girls.

Yung Miami declared her allegiance to “Team Bardi”in 2018

On November 13, 2018, Yung Miami from the City Girls was featured on The Breakfast Club. When Tha God inquired whether the duo would collaborate with Nicki Minaj, Yung Miami replied:

“I’d prefer to steer clear of that question. I’m Team Cardi, the City Girls are Team Cardi. Cardi supports us. We don’t even need to ask; every day, we see her tweeting about us. She really loves the City Girls… I’m Team Bardi… that’s it.”

At that time, JT, Yung Miami’s partner, was incarcerated for credit card fraud. Shortly after Yung Miami’s proclamation, an unexpected beef sparked between Nicki Minaj and the duo when an old video of JT surfaced online.

The footage, predating their fame, featured JT freestyling in a car with the following comment about Minaj:

“I don’t f*** with Nicki; I’m in a beef with Nicki.”

This clip gained traction on social media, prompting Yung Miami to defend her collaborator during an Instagram Live, stating:

“We were just joking around freestyling. We didn’t think anyone would ever hear that. We never imagined we’d get signed. Y’all are so annoying. You’re trying to end the City Girls, but it’s not going to happen.”

Years later, when the video’s controversy faded, the City Girls participated in an undercover social media session with GQ. Upon being questioned about a possible collaboration with Nicki Minaj, the duo remarked:

“We’re hoping for it in the future, seriously. While some people mock us, saying we’ll never get that collaboration, you never know what’s possible.”

Their response suggested that they were ready to move on from past conflicts with the “Only”artist and looked forward to potential future projects.

Minaj chose to move past the rivalry following her 2022 interview

In another part of her conversation on The Morning Hustle, Nicki Minaj articulated how the past disses from the City Girls influenced her decision to distance herself from the duo, explaining:

“As an artist and a person, if I were going to dinner with you, and then I learned that you didn’t really care for me and had been saying negative things about me, I wouldn’t want to go anymore. I might like you, but if I find out the feeling isn’t mutual, it changes everything.”

Following her insights on the collaboration dilemma, the City Girls reached out to Nicki to mend fences. The next day, Minaj tweeted about their positive conversation, stating, “Let’s move on and create new memories.”

In a show of unity, both rappers retweeted Minaj’s post, referring to her as “queen.”

Two years after their reconciliation, in June 2024, the City Girls announced their split, each pursuing their individual musical paths.
