Reasons Behind Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom’s 2017 Split: Singer Found Actor “Boring” and Unwilling to Play “Games”

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom are among the most prominent celebrity couples and have been a couple for nearly eight years. Their love story began at the 2016 Golden Globes, where they humorously fought over an In-N-Out burger. In a March 2019 episode of American Idol, Perry reminisced about that memorable meeting:

“I met my boyfriend over In-N-Out. We were at the Golden Globes and we weren’t together. So I had my security guard grab 10 In-N-Outs and all of a sudden I see my boyfriend’s hand — he wasn’t even sitting at our table — he just swoops in and he grabs it and I was like, ‘Hey that’s my burger!’”

Despite their seemingly perfect romance, Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom did experience a brief breakup in 2017. During a September 4, 2024, episode of Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast, Perry opened up about how they were in different mental spaces when their relationship began.

“I mean, he was in a way, because he had just done a huge time of celibacy, and he had set intentions. I was fresh out of a relationship, and I was just like, ‘I can’t do this anymore. I need to go swim in a different pond,’ but I had yet to do a lot of real work,”Perry shared.

“It saved my life”— Katy Perry on the transformative retreat that healed her relationship with Orlando Bloom

In February 2019, during her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Perry recounted the romantic moment when the Pirates of the Caribbean star proposed to her on Valentine’s Day that same year. However, their wedding plans were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They later moved in together and welcomed their first child, Daisy Dove Bloom, in August 2020.

During her recent podcast conversation, Katy Perry discussed in detail the brief split with Orlando Bloom in 2017 and how their relationship was rekindled after Perry underwent a mindset transformation following a retreat.

Perry elaborated on how Bloom took part in a week-long retreat at the Hoffman Institute in California, where therapists assist individuals in achieving a ‘reborn’ state by working through their neural pathways via physical activities.

Upon his return from the retreat, Bloom exhibited a significant shift in his outlook. Perry noted:

“He wasn’t playing this cat-mouse game anymore. And I was like, ‘This is boring. I’m moving on, I was like, ‘This is boring. I’m moving on.’”

The Roar singer expressed that she wasn’t fond of Orlando’s new demeanor and felt compelled to move on due to the absence of excitement. However, after their split, Perry attended the Hoffman retreat herself.

“I got the tools and spoke the same language, and it changed my life. It saved my life. I would be dead without it. I would not be on this planet without that process — and meditation,”she reflected.

Perry’s retreat experience not only aided her in reshaping her thoughts post the less-than-stellar reception of her 2017 album Witness but also played a crucial role in strengthening her bond with Bloom.

During the podcast, she recounted visiting Orlando Bloom while performing at one of his vacation spots. This visit helped them reconcile, and since then, they have not faced any public disputes.

Katy Perry concluded her discussion by highlighting how they complement each other in various situations. While she often assumes the “alpha”role, Perry admitted her need for support, with Orlando Bloom serving as her perfect anchor.
