Dr. Crockett Marcel, portrayed by Dominic Rains, made his debut in season 5 of Chicago Med. Recently, in the last five episodes, Marcel emerged as a pivotal character, serving as a trauma surgeon at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center. Rumors concerning Rains’ departure from the show began in June 2024, ahead of the season 10 premiere scheduled for September 25.
In an interview with One Chicago Center on September 24, showrunner Allen MacDonald discussed the narrative surrounding Marcel’s exit. He shared:
“Dominic does not return at the top of season 10 and we explain his departure to you pretty quickly. The reason I decided to do that was just simply I felt that Dr. Crockett Marcel had already been written out at the end of last season.”
The departure of actor Dominic Rains sparked curiosity among fans regarding Dr. Marcel’s narrative trajectory. In the season 9 finale, Marcel grappled with the death of a patient, reflecting his own profound grief.
Reports indicate Rains’ exit aligns with a trend where former Chicago Med cast members pursue new opportunities. Notable alumni include Brian Tee (Dr. Ethan Choi) and Torrey DeVitto (Dr. Natalie Manning), both of whom left the series for different projects.
Chicago Med: Dr. Crockett Marcel’s Emotional Storyline
The hints of Dr. Crockett Marcel’s departure were evident in the season 9 finale. His final storyline involved a young liver transplant patient whose life was cut short by an infection, leading to the father’s tragic decision to take his own life, overwhelming him with grief.
This devastating occurrence had a profound effect on Marcel, reminding him of his own daughter’s battle with leukemia, which she lost shortly before her first birthday. The feelings of helplessness and regret resurfaced as he struggled to cope with the loss of his patient.
In a poignant exchange with nurse Maggie Lockwood, Marcel expressed how the child’s death resonated deeply with the memory of losing his daughter, Harper. This moment served as a crucial point in his storyline, illustrating the emotional turmoil he faced, which hindered his ability to continue his work as a surgeon.
In his conversation with One Chicago Center, showrunner Allen MacDonald stated:
“It was left in a way that he could come back or if he left it, it was understandable that he had some issues of his own that he needed to work out in terms of his grieving process for the loss of his daughter.”
Showrunner Andrea Newman Talks About Character Development on Chicago Med
While Dominic Rains has not formally announced his departure, Chicago Fire showrunner Andrea Newman addressed the complexities involved in long-term character development. In an interview featured on TV Line on January 21, 2024, he remarked:
“Storytelling and in terms of real life, 12 years is a long time and things need to change, just dynamic-wise. You want new characters and you want new dynamics.”
Besides Dominic Rains, several other long-term One Chicago cast members have exited the show recently. For instance, Tracy Spiridakos departed from Chicago P.D. after seven seasons, expressing a desire to “switch it up” and explore new roles during an interview on NBC Insider published on May 22, 2024.
Will Crockett Marcel Return to the Show?
While Dr. Marcel’s departure seems definitive for the time being, the possibility of a future return remains open. Showrunner Allen MacDonald hinted that Chicago Med, much like the broader One Chicago universe, often sees characters making comebacks in the narrative.
MacDonald explained to One Chicago Center:
“There are no solid plans at the moment for this, but I’m very interested in bringing back characters from the past and seeing how they react to the characters they knew in the past, and with the new characters that we’ve added because I would love to see that and I think the audience would too.”
For fans of Chicago Med, the series is available to stream on Peacock.
