Celebrating 40 Years of Rare: A Rich Legacy in Gaming
Rare, the iconic video game development studio founded by Tim and Chris Stamper in 1985, boasts an impressive legacy spanning four decades. To commemorate this significant milestone, the studio is rolling out a series of exciting collectibles, enticing deals, and exclusive in-game gifts for its dedicated player community. Among the many celebrations, their popular live-service title, Sea of Thieves, will feature its own collection of 40th ‘Ruby’ Anniversary festivities.
Kickoff of the Celebrations
Celebrations officially commence on August 4, coinciding with the anniversary date. A heritage plaque will be unveiled at the original location of Ultimate, Rare’s first home in Ashby-de-la-Zouch. Adam Park, Head of Brand and Licensing at Rare, shared details in a recent blog post, stating, “For those not within striking distance of the English Midlands, however, there are new gamerpics and an Xbox dynamic background featuring beloved Rare characters both new and familiar.”

Exclusive Collectible Merchandise
In celebration of its anniversary, Rare is partnering with Fangamer to unveil a new line of retro-inspired designs, comprising themed products from popular titles such as Blast Corps, Banjo-Kazooie, and Jet Force Gemini. Collectors can find a variety of items including shirts, hoodies, and pin packs available through the Rare Collections section at Fangamer.
Additionally, commemorative gaming peripherals have been introduced. The 8BitDo Ultimate 3-mode Controller now features a stylish Rare 40th Anniversary Edition in blue and gold. This versatile wireless controller, which comes with a matching charging dock, is compatible with Xbox consoles, Windows, macOS, and mobile platforms.
Exciting Upcoming Releases
The collection of Rare-themed collectibles continues with a collaboration between Rare and iam8bit to launch a themed vinyl collection, with pre-orders expected to open soon. Furthermore, nostalgic gamers will be able to enjoy twelve classic Rare games, making their way to retro-inspired cartridges from Evercade, although those store pages are not yet live as of this writing.

In-Game Celebrations in Sea of Thieves
For fans of Sea of Thieves, the in-game celebrations will include a Pirate Emporium sale, featuring discounts on Rare-inspired items set to begin on August 6. Additionally, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers can look forward to claiming an exclusive Rare Ruby Emote starting August 5.
A variety of Ruby-themed bonuses will also be attainable through Microsoft Rewards points, cosmetic bundles, login incentives, in-game store promotions, and community events. Adding to the festivities, an updated version of Rare’s All-Stars EP recordings is scheduled for release on Spotify on August 15.
As Rare steps into its fifth decade, the studio not only honors its rich history but also looks forward to continuing to enrich the gaming landscape for fans around the world.
