Rapidus has made headlines as the pioneering Japanese company to unveil plans for 2nm trial production and the integration of ASML’s cutting-edge Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) lithography equipment. This strategic move positions Rapidus as a potential contender in NVIDIA’s supply chain.
Key Milestones: 2nm Trial Production Set for 2025, Full-Scale Production by 2027
The semiconductor landscape is currently dominated by TSMC, which enjoys significant partnerships with major technology firms. In contrast, competitors like Intel Foundry and Samsung are grappling with internal challenges, thereby allowing TSMC to maintain a substantial advantage. However, Rapidus is emerging as a notable player in the semiconductor arena. The company has announced plans to integrate ASML’s EUV scanners into its facilities in Japan, aiming to initiate competitive 2nm production ahead of TSMC.
According to a report by Nikkei Asia, installation of ASML’s EUV systems is scheduled to be completed by year-end 2023. This groundbreaking development is particularly significant for Japan’s semiconductor sector, as the country is among the few to acquire ASML’s advanced equipment. Rapidus plans to initiate trial production of its 2nm nodes by April 2025, with commercial manufacturing expected to roll out in 2027.
On another front, NVIDIA has long been in search of a semiconductor collaboration alongside its key partner, TSMC. Recently, however, they indicated a willingness to consider Rapidus as a prospective provider for their 2nm chips, as detailed in a report from Ctee. The company has demonstrated impressive yield rates and performance metrics, making it an appealing choice for NVIDIA, especially as the tech giant seeks to diversify its supply chain in response to market pressures.
Furthermore, Rapidus has begun attracting attention from notable industry players for its 2nm nodes, with IBM being one of the early adopters. The growing interest from various companies suggests that Rapidus could soon establish itself as a serious competitor to established giants like TSMC. As these developments unfold, it will be fascinating to observe how Rapidus carves out its niche in this highly competitive sector.
