The prevailing shortages in RAM and SSD components have compelled many enthusiasts to postpone or abandon their plans for building custom PCs. This trend is clearly indicated by the latest sales figures.
Market Analysis: Mindfactory Reports Significant Sales Decline Amid Economic Uncertainty; CPU and Motherboard Sales Experience Notable Decrease
The scarcity of DRAM and SSD has resulted in notable price increases across major hardware categories, including graphics cards, pre-built systems, laptops, and various consumer electronics. Although CPUs have remained relatively stable in terms of pricing, they are starting to show signs of decline in sales volumes. The elevated costs of RAM and SSDs are making the prospect of building a PC increasingly impractical for many potential buyers.

Recent data from the notable German retailer Mindfactory indicates a worrying trend: CPU sales have dwindled to under 1, 000 units within a two-week period, a stark decline compared to previous years. In detail, AMD accounted for only 860 CPUs sold in this timeframe, with Intel trailing significantly at just 140. While AMD still leads the sales, the drop-off is alarming, with current sales figures reported to be close to 25 times lower than those of January 2025. Even in a down month like July 2025, sales were still above 13, 000 units weekly.
Furthermore, Amazon has mirrored the decline seen in Mindfactory, with CPU sales dropping sharply. According to the analysis by @TechEpiphanyYT, the data for 2026 reveals a consistent decrease in weekly sales figures. For instance, in the second week of February, Mindfactory reported total CPU shipments of approximately 1, 500, marking a significant decrease of over 50% when comparing sales across two weeks.

Motherboard sales have also observed a dramatic decline, with shipments plummeting from over 3, 000-5, 000 units a week in 2024 to barely over 1, 000 by the end of March. This steep drop, described by @TechEpiphanyYT as unprecedented in his ten years of tracking sales, can be largely attributed to the complex challenges introduced by the “AI Slop”phenomenon, which has severely hampered the ability to construct PCs and shows no signs of abating.
