Ranking the Best Bosses in Every 3D Zelda Game

For enthusiasts of The Legend of Zelda franchise, iconic moments are woven into each installment, from embarking on quests with formidable Gorons to vibing with Zora musicians, and who could forget outsmarting masked adversaries? It’s these encounters that bring a unique flavor to the series, keeping fans engaged and nostalgic.

Since the epic leap into 3D realms with the groundbreaking Ocarina of Time, Zelda’s bosses have transformed into spectacular challenges that showcase creativity, complexity, atmosphere, and an unparalleled theatrical flair. This article offers a nostalgic journey through the series, shining a spotlight on the most memorable bosses from each 3D title, celebrating their artistic design, strategic intricacies, and the exhilarating satisfaction that follows each victory (and yes, I might get lost in some quirky references, so bear with me).

To spice up the discussion, we’re steering clear of final bosses to create a more unexpected ranking. So, here are the memorable nemeses that have shaped each era of Zelda, etching their names into the annals of Hyrule’s history.

7 Thunderblight Ganon

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Every 3D Zelda Best Boss Ranked Breath of the Wild

Players of Breath of the Wild will surely agree that Thunderblight Ganon stands as one of the most formidable foes in the game. This phantom, adept in lightning attacks, commands agility and speed as he guards the Divine Beast Vah Naboris in the Gerudo region.

His rapid, electrifying assaults require players to remain vigilant throughout the battle. Equipped with both a sword and shield, Thunderblight Ganon’s capacity for defense and counterattacks adds to the complexity of the fight. Personally, I invested ample time mastering the art of parrying his moves with stylish backflips, creating openings for the exhilarating Fury Rush.

A standout moment is the ability to reflect his long-range electric attacks and Guardian beams using Link’s shield, reminiscent of the climactic showdown against Ganondorf in Ocarina of Time.

6 Colgera

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

As the Zelda series expands, it’s common to find similarities across various bosses and encounters. However, the confrontation with Colgera in Tears of the Kingdom delivers a fresh experience unlike any previous 3D Zelda boss battle.

While identifying its weak points may be straightforward, the entertainment and cinematic qualities elevate the encounter. Picture epic skydiving sequences through cyclones and ice spikes, where gravity and Link’s mobility are your greatest allies.

Born from Ganondorf’s dark magic, Colgera is a massive, serpentine beast presiding over the Wind Temple, effortlessly combining visual grandeur with engaging gameplay, not to mention its remarkable soundtrack.

5 Gyorg

The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask

Every 3D Zelda Best Boss Ranked Majoras Mask

Gyorg, from Majora’s Mask, is one of the bosses that sends tremors of anxiety through me, especially since I’m not a fan of watery depths and all that lurks within.

This creature plays a critical role in imprisoning the Four Giants and wreaks havoc on the waters of Great Bay. What makes Gyorg memorable is not just his lore but the intense battle that ensues.

Fighting him takes place on a precarious platform encircled by water, and his relentless efforts to knock Link off lead to moments of panic. If you fall, the brief plunge into despair serves as a formidable precursor to the fight’s tension.

Staying composed amidst his ferocious attacks, players must utilize arrows or Zora Link’s electric shield to stun Gyorg, setting him up for counterattacks. The combination of the environment and Gyorg’s aggressiveness undoubtedly makes this one of the most exhilarating boss encounters in Zelda history.

4 Molgera

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

Every 3D Zelda Best Boss Ranked The Wind Waker

The Legend of Zelda series is renowned for its colossal bosses, and Molgera from The Wind Waker stands out as my personal favorite.

This selection wasn’t easy, given the game’s wealth of exceptional bosses, including the clever Gohdan and the whimsical Jalhalla. However, it was the atmosphere and symbolism surrounding Molgera that led to my ultimate decision.

Encountering Molgera means you’ve nearly completed the Wind Temple, momentarily believing you’ve seen all that the game offers, only to be surprised once again. This massive Moldorm, marked by its eerie manta ray-shaped head, burrows into the sands, launching unexpected attacks, which creates a dizzying urgency as the ground shifts beneath you.

Timing your Hookshot to grab its tongue when it surfaces adds an intense layer to the fight, making it one of the most thrilling battles in the game. His airborne phase solidifies the greatness of The Wind Waker’s design, showcasing the ability to interlace epic encounters, clever puzzles, and secrets within a whimsical aesthetic.

Accompanied by an adrenaline-boosting soundtrack, Molgera’s battle is nothing short of spectacular.

3 Stallord

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Many fans of Twilight Princess vividly recall the awe-inspiring confrontation with Stallord, which, bypassing final bosses, secures his place as one of the franchise’s standout battles.

Stallord, a colossal, skeletal dragon-like creature, serves as the Arbiter’s Grounds’ boss. What distinguishes this fight is how it ingeniously requires players to utilize specific mechanics creatively.

Reanimated by Zant, Stallord’s battles necessitate Link to maneuver using the Spinner, a dynamic gadget that allows Link to traverse tracks while delivering blows to the giant’s spine. The unique design and enigmatic lore have fueled fan theories, with one particularly fascinating notion proposing that Stallord might be tied to Volvagia from Ocarina of Time.

2 Colocus

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

Choosing Koloktos from Skyward Sword was an effortless decision for this article. This doesn’t detract from the incredible variety of bosses in the game; rather, it highlights Koloktos’ exceptional creativity and challenge.

For a period, Koloktos held the title of my all-time favorite 3D boss battle, as it felt like a refreshing detour within the gameplay experience, reminiscent of stepping into an entirely different realm.

This magnificent, multi-armed mechanical statue, awakened by Ghirahim, embodies Buddhist motifs, seamlessly aligning with the dungeon’s themes. Players encounter engaging phases marked by diverse attack patterns, compelling you to dodge Koloktos’ assaulting arms while searching for an opportunity to counterattack and seize his sword.

The process of wielding Koloktos’ weapon against him culminates in a highly rewarding finish, encapsulating the essence of an exhilarating game experience.

1 Twinrova

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Every 3D Zelda Best Boss Ranked Ocarina of Time

Admittedly, I wrestled with this selection multiple times, as Ocarina of Time is a treasure trove of remarkable bosses—and indeed, it warrants its own separate discussion.

I contemplated choices like Dark Link, Phantom Ganon, or Bongo Bongo, all of whom showcase remarkable creativity and design. However, the battle against Twinrova stands out, not only for its elaborate mechanics but also for the rich lore and personality that Koume and Kotake, the twin sorceresses, bring to the table.

These Gerudo twins, aged 400, are deeply entrenched in the narrative, relentlessly pursuing the revival of Ganon. Their role as the game’s primary adversaries within the Spirit Temple, along with their manipulation of Nabooru, creates a palpable sense of foreboding as players approach their encounter.

Yet, what’s delightful is the humor they inject into the battle—despite their menacing demeanor, the sibling dynamic adds levity as they bicker and tease each other, even in the face of danger.

Engaging with them becomes a thrilling experience, where players must navigate their elemental magic, employing the mirror shield to reflect attacks back at the opposing sorceress. This clever mechanics reinforces the stellar design philosophy of the Zelda series.
